Christians in Korea Soon to Be Tried
Seoul June 29 The case of Koreans charged with plotting against the government and the ire of the Governor General is to come up for hearing shortly. Some 103 detainees are held, the accused largely professing Christianity. Officials deny torture and claim a courtroom, open trial with counsel. Evidence, in the hands of public prosecutors, is said to be voluminous. The governor general Count Terauchi says religion and politics should be kept apart. General Akash admits the plot theory but notes difficulty obtaining reliable statements from many defendants, who are young students and mission converts. Prison conditions are described as crowded but orderly, with some prisoners occupying more capacious cells. The article notes missionary sympathy for Korean scholars and continued cooperation between government and missions.
