A powerful earthquake in Henan province devastated Hai Kiang region. Reports say thousands perished and many more are starving as widespread collapse and debris hamper救救 relief efforts. Local authorities urge aid for victims.
In Boise on June 4 the Haywood trial opened with James H. Hawley outlining a prosecution claim that the Western Federation of Miners and its inner circle were responsible for multiple deaths including ex governor Steunenberg. He alleged the group used hired assassins and vast funds to advance its aims and cited Harry Orchard’s confession. The defense reserved its opening statement. The first witness then testified about the Broaddus Institute trustees and school affairs, noting reorganizing efforts and ongoing faculty retention with minor exceptions.
Captain Alneworth of the Rush reports seizing a British sealing schooner found legally catching fish off Alaska. He planned to deliver the vessel to British authorities at the next port in Columbia under an agreement between the two governments.
Magistrate Gordon orders Jesse Day and Dopey Tom Wells to stay away from Clarksburg for six months or face arrest. Day had stolen three rugs from Thompson Music in Glen Elk and implicated Wells who was already jailed for carrying a razor. Both opted to leave the city and were released with the warning, lawmen alerted to arrest if seen in the area within six months.
A bomb on a Lepz street injures two detectives and three others as soldiers fire on a crowd wounding twelve. The Associated Press reports the attack occurred as police faced terrorists. A committee of focal Masons will attend the dedication of the Masonite Temple in Fairmont Thursday evening. The Fairmont & Clarksburg Traction Co will run a special car from Clarksburg at 4 15 P M returning after the banquet following the ceremonies. The car is reserved for Masons and their wives.
The North View park festival Saturday night by Thiry's band was a complete success with strong attendance and an excellent musical program. Band president Roy McChelnlane and manager Octave Natalio announced availability for future engagements.
Charles O. Findlay plans a two story department store on Main Street beside Parsons Sanders. The 1606 by 180 feet modern building will have polished plate glass fronts and 2600 square feet of glass with domed entrance. Watts-Lambert Company to occupy the new store in early fall. Gladden and Alexander are architects.
Carlos Mead Davison, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Davison, aged 31, died near the new fair grounds Monday. He leaves a brother Otis Durtenn and a large circle of friends. Funeral services are Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the family’s late home, with burial in Fittro Cemetery on the West Milford road. The services will be led by Rev. B. K. Arthwnot and the Eagles lodge, Mr. Davison’s lodge, will have charge.
At the Adoniram Chapter No. 11 annual election in the Masonic hall Monday night the officers for the ensuing year were named. W. T. Merriman served as High Priest and John Smylie Mechling as King, with A M T Cunningham Scribe and L K Richards Captain of the Host among others.
Four cases were reviewed by Mayor Crile at the city court session. Arthur James was fined 3 and costs for disorderly conduct in the street. W. R. Taylor paid 3 and costs for drunkenness with a 5 fine for a prior offense. Ed Strapers forfeited a put-up fine of 5 after arrest for drunkenness. Ep Berthner, charged with being disorderly, claimed innocence and was held over until night duty begins. Pension Day notes Civil War veterans filing pension papers to Washington for monthly benefits.
In a brief, fragmentary notice from London, a May wedding linked a American bride to a London-based spouse. The sparse text names Oscar Lewighan of New York as a related figure, with no further details due to damaged copy.
The Broaddus Institute alumni gathering will be held at the Waldo hotel tomorrow night at 10 o clock. A formal banquet features elaborate menu items and a guest program including toasts from Dr. W. H. Holden and various alumni speakers.
Work is in progress in the county court room at the court house with a platform and restrum being erected for the sessions. The room will be brought strictly up to date under the supervision of Commissioner B. B. Stout.

Ciel Welch and other acts are teased as part of a varied program featuring East Side performer Jon Murray and The Intelligent cantor. A special matinee Wednesday offers reduced prices for children and adults.
