Ada Cross reports on the death of Lottie Hawking in the state penitentiary. The incident involves another federal convict and results in a fatal stabbing within the facility. Authorities investigate amid ongoing prison safety concerns.
Lottie Hawkins was stabbed to death in a state penitentiary ward by Ada Crom, a notorious convict from Washington DC. Both women were federal prisoners. Hawkins had a two year sentence for theft, Crom twenty years for prior crimes. The motive was Hawkins reporting mistreatment to the matron. Nearby oil district notes report Booth Penn Company drilling No. 4 on J. M. Orr farm with no oil, and drilling No. 3 on H. Davis farm with no results.
William Davis was found guilty of stealing Motorman James M. Fittro’s overcoat from a street car on Saturday night and was sentenced to fifteen days in county jail after a hearing at Wilsonburg. George Brows was acquitted. Davis led officers to the coat hidden at the O’Neil mines. A fight between Davis and Brown occurred during the trial but court restrained it.
Charleston February 13 Special reports the revenue bill being revised to a five cent direct tax for the school fund. The measure was recommitted to the judiciary committee after two days of debate and consideration. The insurance commissioner bill passed the senate. John T Harris proposed a bill on house and senate attaches to reduce costs by about fifteen thousand dollars per session.
The Stalbert hotel burned severely causing an estimated loss of 360,000. Traveling salesman J H Crouse of Baltimore leaped from a third story window and was fatally injured. Stalbert correspondent J H Mack of the American Press Association was injured and died Sunday. David Maxwell faced a school truancy charge in Wilsonburg, claiming his child was beyond compulsory age.
Daniel J. Murphy, former night clerk at the Traders hotel, returns to the city after about ten months away and reoccupies his former desk. He spent the summer as chief clerk at the Belden hotel in Atlantic City and had been in Lonaconing, Md, recently. Local friends rejoice at his return.
Empire National Bank opens in its new Empire Building on Telegram Square after relocating from Oak Hall. The two story, six ton doors open to a marble bronze interior with a 16 by 10 by 30 foot vault, twenty four safe deposit boxes, and lavish mahogany woodwork, brass fixtures, and a private president’s office.
In New Britain a savings bank shortage tied to Mining Treasurer Walker may reach a half million dollars. A Huntington circuit court granted a divorce to Mrs Lou Clouston of Dudley Flower Store. In New York the Thaw trial adjourned due to juror Bolton’s ill wife, permitting a home visit with court officers.
The second day of the Retail Hardware Men's Association convention at the Waldo hotel opened with enrollment of new members and an executive session. J. H. Kreppe reported thanks to speakers, officers elected include B. Kyle as president Thomas B Fry as first vice president E J Kane as second vice president and Kane Hawker as secretary and treasurer.
New market quotations show crude oil up by fifteen cents a barrel with a reclassification labeling light off as amber. West Virginia deep sand and a Pennsylvania premium now sit above the regular grade. the Pennsylvania barrel jumps five cents to $1.63, while West Virginia oil rises fifteen cents to $1.73 per barrel.
At United Besthven church in Northview revival services proceed with notable interest and many inquirers. Rev D W Cunningham preaches as meetings draw crowds, with six to eight new inquirers noted and ongoing attendance.
William M. Lawrence Eliza Hall and Josie Stansberry alias Jackson were bound over to the grand jury by Magistrate Riley after their hearing on charges of conducting and staying in a house of ill fame. The warrant against Maud Hall was dismissed. They could not furnish bail and were jailed. In Block Island the Larchmont disaster tally grew with 61 bodies recovered and 19 survivors listed, as crews and officials reassessed total losses at about 150 to 200 amid frigid seas and dwindling hope.
Judge Artman of Boone County Circuit Court ruled saloon operations have no legal existence and cannot be licensed, citing they threaten public welfare. The decision, reported by Associated Press, recalls his former role in Indiana politics and casts doubt on the liquor trade’s legality. A separate Kokomo dispatch notes 75-year-old Swalette Prisma found dead with a fractured skull, described as an unalleged murder mystery.
