In Birmingham Rose, a Pratt City resident, resisted arrest and opened fire from a hotel room. Police and detectives responded with ammonia bombs and gunfire, wounding Detective J. T. Moser in the hand as officers closed in on the room. Fire crews battled the blaze and the standoff ended with Rose killed.
A violent incident at a hotel ends with the corpse of Rose found on a mattress after attackers forced the door and a gunplay that drew over two thousand bystanders, blocking traffic around the hotel for more than two hours.
Mistress Nina Bang the first woman Danish minister and head of education bans the national anthem as warlike to public good. When the anthem was sung in a theatre she remained seated and pulled cabinet colleagues back by their coats. She plans a complete overhaul of the Danish school system along German lines.
A police story stars William Fairbanks as Patrick Casey with Eva Novak. The feature includes action packed police and gang warfare in a pool room and a dramatic rooftop fight. Esther Ralston appears in a romantic subplot. Townsend Martin adapted the film for the screen.
The Maryland Theatre opens a vaudeville bill today with five acts and a feature film Of the Highway starring Wm Y Mong and Marguerite De La Motte. Highlights include A Breeze From Broadway a singing and dancing number, Bob Milliken in Bits of Nonsense, Coakley and DunLery in a blackface sketch, Fred ae and Company in a Ventrilogual Surprise, and the Arrowsmiths in an athletic novelty act.
The fiftieth annual convention of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union will be held in Baltimore October 1 and 2 at Grace M. E. Church Carralton Avenue and Lanvale Street. Delegates from Washington County go to State Headquarters 616 Park Avenue for assignment with breakfast and judging provided. Lunch and dinner will be served at the convention church. At 6:30 p m on Wednesday September 3 the Jubilee banquet will be held at Grace Church. Brief addresses music and features by the Young People's Brunch will be given. Thursday and Friday will be full of events starting at nine o'clock each morning.
