Aged veteran recalls Civil War service and Lincoln tale

Jim Berry 87 years old told a Herald reporter about his Confederate experiences with Jeb Stuart’s cavalry. He described Antietam Chancellorsville and Bloody Lane actions, lost a finger at Chancellorsville, and said he witnessed Lincoln and Booth’s plot. Berry was born in Randolph County West Virginia and lives in Roanoke.

Fire crews quell slight gasoline blaze at Cearfoss

The Western Enterprise Fire Company responded yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock to a small gasoline fire at Cearfoss. The blaze was extinguished with chemicals without further incident.

Appeals Docketed in City Street Board Case

Appeals were filed after Court decisions in the Mayor and Council Street Board controversy. Writs of mandamus ordered against John D Dunn and Clyde Brewer to vacate Street Commissioner posts. The court reinstated Dr Perry F Prather and J Vincent Jamison Jr, who were removed last April for defying Mayor and Council orders.

Members welcomed Thomas Pong to the club as it reports progress toward federal takeover of the Burnside Bridge to ensure its preservation. Chicago chorus girl jailed after cap kcking incident

Miss Eleanor Kearney, a Chicago chorus girl, was jailed after drinking too much and kicking a policeman's cap. The incident led to her detention in custody overnight.
