Earl Bennett 30, Martinsburg flagman for Baltimore and Ohio, was injured when a westbound B&O train crashed into the rear of a stopped freight at Green Springs, W Va. He reportedly rode the locomotive front as it neared the parked train, leaped to safety, and suffered a fractured left leg. The derailed caboose and seven empty cars, plus the moving locomotive, left the tracks, one of three lines was unblocked, and three passenger trains were detoured over Western Maryland.
A fatal crash left Russell Mack dead and Stotter seriously injured as authorities probe the incident. Washington County Hospital treated Stotter for severe facial lacerations. the cause remains undetermined. Sheriff Huyett and deputies aided the investigation. no charges were filed pending further findings. A separate crash near Hagerstown on Route 40 left Mrs. Steven W. Fink and her three-year-old son Harry with minor injuries. driver Homer Stewart faced a charge for turning without enough distance. Fink and Harry were released after treatment at Washington County Hospital. Emergency crews also responded to the accident scene.
