County Board Cuts 28 of 35 Assessments After Hearings

The Board of County Commissioners reduced assessments in 28 of 35 cases heard this week after hearings. Seven cases saw no change, with reductions ranging from 100 to 1300 dollars and averages around 500 to 800 dollars. Two percent of protests will be reviewed after hearings resume Monday, mostly from Punkstown district property owners amid a wave of protests. Protests from Funkstown district run about 10 daily, and reassessments for Halfway district are expected to finish this month if protest rates stay low.

Hagerstown pastor Elder Neergaard, returning from a three month tour of fourteen countries, arrived in Copenhagen to learn his mother was dying. He prayed at her bedside as she passed away and later faced mixed local reactions in Damascus Cairo and elsewhere during his journey before returning to Hagerstown to resume his duties.

Smoother Highway Ride On New Dense Grade Base

Road crews on Cearless Pike and Boonsboro Sharpsburg Road report smoother travel due to a dense grade aggregate base. The base is 12 inches thick and mixed with calcium chloride and water to harden concrete, topped by three four inch courses of blacktop. The method, used in Maryland Virginia North Carolina and beyond, shows highly satisfactory results.

Dr. Watlington Dies Retired Baptist Pastor

The Rev. Dr Fail B Wallington Sr pastor of the First Baptist Church for nearly 24 years died this morning at 7 o clock in Marlin Manor Convalescent Home aged 41. He retired June 3 1953 after a stroke and was born in Pittsylvania County Virginia. He served at Hagerstown Church from Temple Church in Baltimore in 1929 helping departmentalize the Sunday School.

Havana reports that after day long fighting a rebel force aided by police and dissidents in Cienfuegos was crushed. Government says many killed or wounded as 400 rebels seized police HQ but were routed by tanks planes and troops. Escaping rebels fled into hills as Castro followers joined later.

Assessors Get Extension On County Survey

Frederick County tax assessors received a six month extension to complete their survey of the tax structure. The State Tax Commission granted the extension after A. Lamar Barrick said more time was needed to survey all farm properties. The move follows the resignation last June of Democratic county assessor Robert L. Shipley who cited inequitable assessments. The commission asked Thomas J. A. Ceres to oversee progress and determine what has been accomplished in the investigation.

Minor collision damages two cars at Jonathan and Worth Streets

A minor crash damaged two cars at the junction of Jonathan and Worth Streets when a northbound vehicle turned left into the path. Sumer E. Wynn, 23, of Dade City, Florida, was charged with making a left turn that caused the collision.

Labor Of Years For Big Pool Family Wiped Out By Blaze

A wildfire in the Big Pool area destroyed the Tedrick residence and several outbuildings worth about 1500 dollars. Mrs Tedrick notes the loss could have been far worse without quick volunteer fire crews from Williamsport and Clear Spring. County Agent Mark Miller reports 105 year old apple trees and bee hives were damaged. insurance may cover some losses but replacement is uncertain.

Rabbi Schwartz to Leave Hagerstown for Williamsport

Rabbi David L. Schwartz, reader at Beth Israel Abraham Hebrew congregation, will leave Hagerstown Monday to become rabbi of Beth Ha-Shalom in Williamsport, Pa. He and Mrs. Schwartz and their children Philip and Debra reside at 1314 Potomac Avenue. Since 1952 he has served various community roles, including hospital chaplaincy, Rotary Club, and boards such as Community Rescue Service and Washington County Heart Association.

Construction in City Ahead of Last Year

City construction activity through August 31 shows progress over the previous year.
