In Panama City and nationwide, voters backed the two Panama Canal treaties by wide margins. Unofficial returns show 140,178 yes to 76,311 no from 910 districts, with turnout near 30 percent of the 800,000 eligible voters.
An unidentified woman was killed near Dade County when a white single engine plane with red lettering plummeted and struck her after a dusk takeoff. Robert Cook of Miami witnessed the incident as the aircraft landed ahead of him and then disappeared. Police seek witnesses from two cars and a full description of the plane.
A South Side Chicago hotel blaze killed seven and injured twelve, authorities say. The fire started in a first floor apartment and engulfed the two story brick building, with damage estimated near 495000. Firefighters struggled as residents fled, one firefighter knocked unconscious when a woman jumped from the second floor onto him.
Prince Charles rode with Tobin and Anne Armstrong at a Texas range aboard an English saddle during a three day Lone Star State tour. The town later declared the contest a good publicity boost.

A Minnesota Law Review study examined states from 1960 to 1970, finding deterrence linked to imprisonments after murder rather than executions, noting court-ordered limits on capital punishment in many states.
