De Haviland Plane To Headline Local Fair Air Show

An aviation highlight for the upcoming fair includes a De Haviland aircraft piloted by Walter Becker a World War II veteran. Becker will bring the French design used by the government during the war and perform spins for visitors at the fairground near the Funkstown pike.

KIDDIES TO HAVE THREE DAYS OFF DURING THE FAIR

The public schools will be closed Wednesday Thursday and Friday of next week, a Fair Week measure to allow attendance at the big show. The county seat will close Friday as in other years. A half holiday will be given on Armistice Day in response to a request from the American Legion. The School Board took no action on teachers salaries. Antietam Fire Company holds its regular monthly meeting tonight at 7 30 at the hall. all members urged to attend for important business.

Comrades Pay Tribute to Fred Poole in Hagerstown

The body of Frederick Poole arrived from Camp Dix New Jersey and was taken to Watking and Minnich funeral rooms for services led by Rev F R Bayley of St Paul M Z Church. Members of the American Legion sent sympathy and a $3 check for flowers. large numbers of flowers accompanied the body. Building permits listed include a frame burial, a two story brick building on Pact Street, a three story apartment on Washington Street, and other minor projects.

Light Company Wins Tax Refund on War Coal

The Municipal Light Company received a $1947 tax refund for coal taxes alleged to be wrongly collected during the war. The report notes wartime coal taxes were charged to companies and later refunded after review. Chief Barber announced 46 arrests and $224 seized in two weeks. Street officials and light plant staff provided reports as new patrol assignments and staff changes were noted.

Opening of Pennsylvania Triangle Draws Thousands

Thousands from Pennsylvania and other states packed California Park in Gettysburg for the celebration of the Pennsylvania Triangle highway opening. A 500-car Harrisburg procession led the crowd as settlers and descendants in period garb paraded in antique vehicles amid a pageant of Native, Scotch Irish, Quaker, German, and frontier figures.

Officials on Water Hunt in Hancock Region

Mayor Ankeny and city officials led by Engineer J B Ferguson tour streams around Hancock seeking a reliable water supply. They inspect Little Conococheague Creek near Indian Springs and other nearby streams with a full day planned in the mountains. A final report is expected at tomorrow night’s meeting. A plan for a high dam on Covococheague may be considered if gravity can drive water to the city.

Judge assails constables over dry law enforcement

Judge Gillan opened the October term of Quarter Sessions at Chambersburg and delivered a sharp rebuke to county constables for neglecting their duties under state and federal temperance laws. He cited parts of the statutes and warned of continued inaction contributing to illegal liquor traffic by bootleggers and rum runners.
