Bankers Plan Dinner Meet in Maryland
Bout 200 bankers from four Maryland counties will attend the semi annual dinner of Group 2 Maryland Bankers Association on Friday at 6:80 p.m. at Hotel Alexander. Principal speaker Prof Marcus Nadler of NYU will discuss The Bond Portfolio Problem During the War Period. U S Senator George L Radcliffe of Maryland is also scheduled to speak. Attending will be officers of the Maryland Bankers Association and representatives of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Large Opium Ring Reported Smashed
Geneva authorities report Egypt police cracked a major opium and hashish ring after an Arab refused a bribe. Police found nearly 264 pounds of narcotics in 19 camels stomachs, and smugglers used camels to carry zinc cylinders through quarantine into Egypt.

Three Minor Accidents at Washington County Hospital
Three minor accident cases were admitted to Washington County Hospital yesterday. The regular monthly Washington County Christian Endeavor Union meeting with 23 members was held at the Presbyterian Church. Lola May reported on the Regional C E Conference in Trenton and urged greater attendance for the May 1940 gathering in Clarksburg. New 1939 40 year superintendents were named and a leadership course with seven registrants was noted. The next meeting date was set for January 5.

Residence Burned in Mt. Zion Monday Night
The Asa Kuhn home in Mt. Zion burned Monday night with origin undetermined. Smithsburg fire department arrived to find the frame structure engulfed. The family escaped unharmed and all household contents were destroyed. The January garnet is not related to the fire.

Safety Director To Be Speaker Tonight
Harold F. Webb general safety director for American Water Works and Potomac Edison Company will address the Boy Scout Leaders training course on Scouts Health Safety and First Aid at Woodland Way Junior High School tonight at 7 30. Webb is a National Safety Council member and a noted first aid authority who has cooperated with Johns Hopkins on electric shock effects and artificial respiration. He is deputy field commissioner in Allegany County for Boy Scouts of America and is well qualified to speak to the group. All troop committee men scouts masters assistant scoutmasters are urged to attend.
