New York May 27. The stock market rose in a major buying wave as inflation fears and possible open market for gold spurred broad gains. Shares surged 1 to 8 points, daily volume around 5 million, with gold stocks like Homestake jumping before backing off on profits.
Maryland’s share of federal road funds under the public works bill is 3.879 million dollars. The Doughton amendment bases allocations on regular federal-aid and state populations, promising an increase of about 480 thousand dollars for Maryland. The quota is not guaranteed, merely the maximum allotment possible under the program.
Carl Jacobs reported an attempted hijacking of a $1,000 cargo beer from his truck last night between Elkton and the Delaware line. Four men were involved, two jumped to the running board, and Jacobs struck one on the head with an iron bar, believing the man fell under the rear wheels. The assailants used a New York plated auto and fled as glass shattered.

The century of progress exposition in Chicago opened today with gates at 8 20 a.m. amid pageantry and dedication by Postmaster General James A. Farley representing President Roosevelt. The fair, built on reclaimed land along Lake Michigan, aims for a 50 million attendance and runs to November 1 with star performances including Lawrence Tibbett singing the National Anthem as Arcturus rays illuminate the grounds.
A 23 year old Racine tea room cashier rises from ordinary life to royalty as Chicago's Century of Progress selects Lillian Anderson from 61 contestants as queen. She receives 5000 dollars and presides at fair functions. she is described as a five foot six blonde with violet eyes and a 125 pound frame.
Mrs. Bruce MacDonald a wealthy Flint widow and former bank cashier’s wife was found murdered in a Crescent Drive home. Police sought her 17 year old son Babe, who had been at the house, after the discovery by a maid and houseman. The murder weapon was a heavy book end. The case prompted a search at Glenwood cemetery and a lake cottage linked to the missing youth.
Clerk Edward Oswald reports 27 new beer licenses issued this month, bringing the total since April to 217 and total fees to about 8700 dollars. About 1200 dollars is expected for distribution among corporate towns on June 1. About 7500 dollars was distributed on May 1, with Hagerstown receiving roughly 4500 dollars.
Weather outlook for the North and Middle Atlantic States shows showers Monday and likely Tuesday, fair midweek, and more showers Friday or Saturday. Temperatures above normal early week, cooler Wednesday, and a gradual warmup by Saturday inland.
The first group from Hagerstown and Washington County travels to Camp Holvard Baltimore for two weeks training before joining a forest camp in the state. Milwaukee May 27 David A Kasmerbank a 21 year old farm hand of Kewaunee Wis appeared before a federal court commission to testify against Carl Kasten of Horicon in a liquor case He said he placed a rubber bulb under his left arm then ran an attached hose down his right sleeve into his hand Served liquor he said he dropped the hose into the glass pressed his left arm to his side and the glass was drained Kasten was held to the grand jury.
Mrs. Soblenski testified that her husband Steve, after 20 years in the saloon business, has been broke since 3.2 beer became legal this spring. He bemoaned no customers and police threats to close him, arguing legal beer caused his downfall.
Four inmates at the State penal farm at Roxbury fled in a truck while on an errand. The abandoned truck was found off the side road toward Funkstown. The escapees included William Chenowith at Cumberland with months left, James Gossage of Baltimore with 16 months, Meredith Morgan of Frederick with 40 days, and Earl Gouker of Reisertown with 5 months. Police issued alerts as guards expected quick recapture.
Mrs. Gus Winkler of Phoenix Hill Westernport was brought to jail for questioning after a dynamiting at a Westernport Elbow section house last night. The blast damaged the house, occupants escaped unharmed. James Clark witnessed a fire under the house before the explosion threw him across the street. Police Chief J E Crabtree tracked Winkler to Phoenix Hill and detained her after she appeared in male attire.
Well known Hagerstown attorney Q V Middlehay residing on Virginia avenue was admitted to Washington County Hospital today for observation and treatment.
Denver May 27 Four bodies believed to be Dr W T De War and his wife Harold Stevens and his wife all of Grand Junction Colorado were found after a monoplane vanished en route from Denver to Grand Junction Dr De War was piloting the craft en route to take an aviation license exam.
The Wisconsin assembly defeats a bill to fix beer at 12 dollars per barrel and allow a large glass for five cents, while Washington posts closing notices report the St James School post office in Maryland ending season June 15.
John Smith 18 waived a preliminary hearing before Justice Harry E. Snyder and was committed to jail without bond for first degree murder in the shooting of Gordon Goodheart 33 a Weverton barber. Goodheart died at Frederick hospital days after the incident. Smith signed a statement claiming no harm intended.
In Columbus on May 27 Mrs. D. A. Robertson reports unusual animal cooperation. The family cat has been living in the hen house watching over the baby chickens while their mother is away. Recently four kittens were found in a nest, and the hen often visits the newcomers and sits on them while the cat goes out.
Clerk Edward Oswald announced merchants and garage owners must renew trade licenses by June 1 to avoid a 10 percent penalty. After June 1 the fee increases by 10 percent, with additional penalties added on the first of each month thereafter for May renewals.
Washington May 27 The Senate investigation into the Morgan banking house reported fresh news that about six of the twenty partners are in debt to the firm. The six names were withheld but the disclosure sparked calls for government regulation of private banks like J P Morgan’s. The information came in executive session from John W Davis, Morgan’s attorney. Investigators prepared for further disclosures as the inquiry resumes next Wednesday amid internal committee disputes and Senate deliberations. Ferdin Pecora led the counsel in questioning during the hearings.
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U S A postpones formal merger discussions with the United Presbyterian Church of North America for at least one year. The delay follows approval of a recommendation by Dr. J Ross Stevenson of Princeton Theological Seminary.
The Maryland State will offer bonds for emergency relief and unemployment plus construction funds on August 15. Two issues total 14.0 million dollars with 7.0 million for relief and unemployment and 8.1 million for construction. Additional issues totaling 53.0 million and 3.0 million are planned for future sales. Proceeds fund hospitals, welfare, and armory projects across the state including Maryland Penitentiary, Henryton Sanatorium, and the University of Maryland.
