Khrushchev seeks to retain leadership amid Cold War tensions as a possible new arms drive and peace campaign unfold. The Premier faces domestic pressure and Western pushback while planning moves that could shape future disarmament talks and power within the Soviet hierarchy.
In Eugene and Portland Morse accuses Sen Kennedy of trying to buy the White House through unconscionable spending as Oregon Democrats prepare for the state primary. The fire prevention committee of the Hagerstown Fire Department will meet tonight at 6 at the Junior Fire Hall. Members from the department and community volunteers are expected to attend to discuss safety policies and upcoming inspections.

A motorist was charged with driving the wrong way on a one way street after his car collided with a moving vehicle and then hit a parked car. Feliz Namaka, 18, Keedysville, was southbound on South Locust Street, striking George F. Herring’s northbound auto and crashing into Mary Kindler’s parked car. Namaka was charged with traveling the wrong way and operating a vehicle without a license. A Shirley B. Robinson vehicle was damaged by an unidentified car during the incident.
City revenue totals show $2,101,003 in general funds with $3,029,603 from all sources including utility and bond funds. Reimbursements cover debt on Sewage, Light Plant, Water Department, and airport improvements. Revised estimates to $2,629,802 were surpassed by actual revenue, prompting a note on how funds funded city services.

The Washington County Volunteer Firemen's Association holds its regular monthly meeting on Thursday May 19 at 3 pm at Halfway Fire Hall Halfway with the Halfway Fire Company as hosts. An executive committee meeting precedes the main session and all member companies should have their delegates present. Refreshments will be provided by the host company's entertainment committee.
Chariton Bros Transportation Co of Hagerstown received the American Trucking Associations safety plaque for an outstanding 1950 safety record. Walter Von Lindenberg accepted the award from Neil J. Curry at the ATA spring meeting at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Los Angeles.
A fire in the rear storage room of the Woodmen of the World Building at 100 block N Potomac St drew hundreds of onlookers. Fire Chief John Hall said the blaze began about 12 15 am and is still under investigation with no injuries reported. apartments were evacuated but occupancy is undamaged. Firefighters accessed the fire from rear and roof, with smoke blanketing the front and the building listed for sale for over a year. Damages are not yet estimated.
The Department of Motor Vehicles announced license suspensions for six county drivers. Vernon Edw Barthiow of Hagerstown is suspended for 008 months, Ralph Wayne Houser of Worrest Drive faces one month, Richard E Kauffman of Madison Ave. one month, Clarence E Kline of Smithsburg one month, Edgar H Lecrone of Fortunll Ave. one month, and Gary D Powell of Ravenwood Heights for ape month.
Hancock Grange to hold a May 26 meeting at 8 p.m. in the local elementary school. The Hancock Grange will host the event with all members urged to attend.
