School Board Budget Calls for $687,732 Total

The county faces a school budget request of 687,732 including 556,442 from the county and 131,340 from the state. A 71.5 cent levy is planned, plus bonds of 621,000 for new schools and 61,600 for repairs or a Broadway building, totaling 1,370,382 for the fiscal year.

School Levy Requests Refine County Budget Totals

County asks for a levy totaling 736 881 with 600 351 for schools down from last year. Major change is capital outlay including new schools and repairs. Instructional services rise to 420 452 with distribution across salaries, maintenance, transportation and debt service. Bond plan earmarks 220 000 for new Hagerstown schools and 75 000 each for Hancock and Smithsburg highs plus 110 000 for Clear Spring.

Eichelberger Held in Case

William Hichelberger of Hagerstown was arraigned in Martinsburg before Justice J D Smith on charges of assaulting Frances Huffer, a nine year old Martinsburg student. He was held without bond for the Berkeley County Grand Jury. The girl identified him after a ride in his truck as two other men questioned her for nearly two hours. A Martinsburg physician testified the girl showed injuries. State officials oppose bond. habeas corpus may allow bail if the case reaches court.

Joy Rider Given 90 Days In Jail

Henry R. Garlock received a ninety day jail sentence after police reports of reckless joy riding in the southern section of Hagerstown. State Policeman Cabbage arrested Garlock on charges of driving an automobile while intoxicated.

Preschool conference for mothers at Halfway School May 15

A pre school conference for mothers whose children start school next September will be held at Halfway School on May 15 at 1 30 with Dr Ernest Poole and health nurse Mrs Isabel Hull attending. A second conference will occur Friday at 1 30 at Sharpsburg serving Kee dysville Antietam Furnace Dargan and nearby areas with clinics planned at Williamsport and Boonsboro later.
