Cumberland Maryland May 12 Mayor Thomas W Koon stated there is a slight chance there will be no decrease in the city tax rate for the 1938 39 fiscal year and a possibility the rate may be increased a few percent according to city officials in Cumberland.
The Alsatia Club schedules its regular monthly meeting for Monday evening May 16 in the club rooms with President Rex D. Gaver presiding. Reports from membership and softball committees are due, door prize awarded, and new memberships may be presented as the Softball League enters its third season with about seventy five members. Officers include Vice President Kiefer Bowers Secretary Earl Stoner Treasurer Norman Reed and Financial Secretary M Perry Porterfield.
Baltimore Mayor Howard W. Jackson warned five Democratic rivals in Cumberland that he is ready for an open campaign. He said rivals want a gentle contest but he will discuss issues and reveal who backs other candidates, promising a not hush hush race.
About 250 former employees of J C Roulette and Sons are receiving unemployment benefits after the company closed. Philip Becher, former superintendent, says compensation helps workers during unemployment. Cr W Sleasman notes employee statements support the continued security of benefits.
President Roosevelt plans to ask Congress before adjournment for funds to begin work on ships from the 1 billion dollar fleet expansion bill. He will seek appropriations for two cruisers several auxiliaries and several small warships after the measure passes both houses. The bill authorizes a 20 percent increase in navy tonnage but does not provide the funds.
Washington May 12 Commerce Secretary Roper reported no sign of prosperity as a depression persists. A business survey released at a press conference showed mine and factory output essentially unchanged in April versus March, though steel production remained steady and several optimistic factors appeared.
The report notes a drop in used car inventories and a surge in new car sales ahead of factory output. It also records a below seasonal dip in coal production and a deceleration in the rise of cumulative unemployment.
Oswego New York officials including Mayor and Chief of Police examined meter operations. Commissioners Clyde B. Brewer and Captain Carl H. McCleary discussed install plans for the first two blocks of West Franklin Street, with meters expected within a week.
Fines totaling 431 were paid by 288 violators in Hagers Town in April. Parking offenses led with 257 convictions. other violations included speed 17, careless driving 3, defective brakes 2, stop sign violations 19, and drunken driving 1. Officers also investigated 24 burglary cases and eight cars were stolen. Carnauba wax imports noted as Brazil source.
