Washington County endured a record March blizzard that dumped 28 inches of snow, halting schools, clogging highways, and stringing up city crews to clear sidewalks. Officials warned more snow likely, while Potomac drainage appeared stable.
Prime Minister John Curtin cited Justice Charles Lower's inquiry findings on the February 19 Darwin raid. He confirmed Darwin deaths totaled 15 with the rest in harbor or air battles and stated the total killed would not exceed 240.
March 30 report from Latta CG states an army airman ran out of fuel near the town. He maneuvered to avoid traffic by circling the road several times then touched down safely on a nearby state highway.

Herbert E. Lovell, a well known retired merchant from the Benevola area, quietly observed his 76th birthday on Sunday.
About 12 people from the North American Rod and Gun Club and their wives were marooned in the club’s clubhouse by a snowstorm that closed the road. They lacked coal oil and food until supplies arrived. A club member from Security found them Sunday morning. They crossed Antietam creek later Sunday and were driven to their homes by a car from the North American Cement Corp. plant.
A two vehicle crash near the airport on the Midlburg Pike left G A McLaughlin with a dislocated shoulder and leg injuries after his car was struck while he cleaned a windshield. Roy A Diverbiss says fog and a cloudy windshield prevented proper sighting. McLaughlin taken to Washington County Hospital with no charges filed. Another noon crash near Funkstown involved George H Lowery and Gerald B Smyre with no injuries reported. Deputy Sheriff Kenneth A Stangle investigated.
Maryland men registered in the third selective service registration will start receiving draft questionnaires on April 6. Each draft board will mail an average of 50 questionnaires to new registrants daily, aiming to finish by May end. Questionnaires follow lowest order numbers, must be returned within five days, or be deemed delinquent. Local boards will classify registrants and draft advisory boards assist in filling forms. Occupational questionnaires will accompany the new forms to assess work ability, starting with new registrants and then all state registrants.
British commandos hit the St Nazaire submarine base Saturday, destroying the pumping station and main lock gate. The raid, praised as spectacular, may cripple the base for a year and push U boats to other ports like Lorient or Bordeaux. Survivors welcomed home as officials say British losses were likely under 100.
Nearly half of former 1-B registrants from Hargers town and Washington County, who underwent medical exams in Baltimore, will be inducted in the next group. The rest must have defects corrected by their own physician or be inducted with defects corrected. The Baltimore group was the first under the new rehabilitation program, and future 1-B qualifiers may choose doctor corrections or immediate 1-A induction.
German high command said Lübeck civilian losses were severe after a British bombing raid hit the Baltic port Saturday night. The blast mainly struck residential areas in Lübeck, a key port for trade with Sweden and a supply hub for German troops in Norway and the far north Russian front.
An air raid warden checked a Ninety Six house and found its roof completely covered with sand. The occupant had misunderstood instructions leading to the unusual build up.
A peacetime navy aerial attack method credited with a decisive February 20 engagement near New Britain in the south Pacific. Lieut. Comm. John S. Thach said the tactic differed from British and U S army methods and was highly successful, destroying 19 Japanese bombers with only two American fighters lost.
Senator Reed charged that defense project workers were coerced into paying union fees totaling about 30.37 million dollars. He cited an ordnance project near Warson, Kansas, where common laborers paid a 12 dollar initiation plus 2 dollars monthly dues to the International Hod Carriers Union. Reed urged Senate action to curb forced union membership on federally funded jobs and called for a wider inquiry into alleged racketeering in unions linked to Army Engineer Corps projects.
Senator Walsh said the Senate Naval Affairs committee will likely call Admiral Ernest J. King, chief of the fleet, to explain anti submarine efforts in the Atlantic. The inquiry would assess patrols and measures after Axis submarines sank about 70 merchant ships since the U S entered the war.

Pearson Lessy a 34 year old furniture salesman was found shot dead on a lawn near his home. Within hours a 21 year old brunette Miss Louise Ahate Camden was held as a material witness in a murder case after saying she spent the weekend with Lessy and he left her home shortly before his body was found. Police report threatening calls from an unidentified man preceded the slaying. Lessy formerly married to singer Charlotte Cloverdale aka Charlotte Dale. Police believe the victim was slain as he stepped from his automobile.
The Board of License Commissioners warned beverage licensees that tomorrow is the last day to file renewal applications. About 25 licensees have not filed yet. Protests to renewals must also be filed by tomorrow close of business under the same procedure as new licenses.
British planes patrolling the coasts of Norway and Denmark torpedoed and probably sank a German supply ship and set afire a smaller vessel last night, the air minister announced.
The White House announced the creation of a new Pacific war council to include Australia New Zealand Canada Free Britain the Netherlands China and the United States to coordinate war problems Roosevelt said the nations now actively engaged in the Pacific conflict must act together with urgency. The first meeting is set for Wednesday with broad representation across Allied powers.
Local autoists face rationing of recaps next week and are warned that speeds above 35 mph can rapidly wear retreaded tires. Reclaimed rubber should last four to five thousand miles if tires are kept aired and speeds stay below 35 mph.

Coston of Westbrook, Conn., says word from his brother is awaited but hopes he is safe. William has been in the Orient for 21 years and visited home in 1940. his wife remains in Westbrook due to health.
A meeting of interest to all persons in the building industry will be held at o'clock tonight in the council room of City Hall. Two members of the Federal Housing agency and a representative from the priorities division of this agency will be present. Building supply real estate banks building and loan men are invited to attend.
A Blue Ridge Transportation Company bus en route from Frederick to Hagerstown skidded on a grade near Crowl's Garage below Boonsboro in heavy snow. It struck a parked car in front of the garage before running into a bank. The mishap happened about 7:30 AM. the parked car suffered severe damage.

Japanese warplanes continued to strike at the outer bastions of Australia�s defenses. Darwin had its eighth raid of the war this afternoon. A bomber and three Navy fighters struck Port Moresby on the south coast of New Guinea but were driven off, causing damage in the town�s 22nd attack. Japan�s reprieve from the high point of her invasion was marked by Air Minister Drakeford declaring allied losses included 48 bombers and fighters in recent weeks. Official reports list 1,025 Japanese planes destroyed since Pearl Harbor. These successes, with small forces, are no longer merely tactical but have produced a marked strategic difference. Melbourne reports Prime Minister John Curtin said Australia would be gratified by a visit from Wendell Willkie, the 1940 Republican presidential candidate. No formal invitation was issued, but Curtin said Australia would welcome him. Willkie had considered a trip last year but wartime events blocked it.
