Berlin reports British raiders strike at the occupied French naval base of St Nazaire. The German high command says one destroyer nine motor torpedo boats and four larger torpedo boats were destroyed. A former American destroyer laden with explosives blew up before reaching the harbor gates.
Sixteen men enlisted in the Army this week at the local recruiting office with seven from the county and nearby. Major General Reckord urged a sustained drive for 18 and 19 year olds, noting many could be assigned to their preferred arm, including the Air Corps.
Washington reports that the Office of Price Administration will crack down if pork product prices rise above mid March levels. Dan A West, OPA consumer division director, urged buyers to question increases in ham bacon chops and report marked rises. Current pork prices are near season highs with limited supplies and dealers have an obligation to public health.
A Hawaiian birth story ends with a distant cry from Philadelphia as Baby Joan Wilkie dies in Honolulu. Her parents are U S N Chief Quartermaster Charles F Wilkie and Mrs Wilkie of Philadelphia. The grandmother in Philadelphia heard the news as the family tried to connect by wire. Joan cried, ending a poignant attempt to share a first greeting.
Ace the German Shepherd, famed for jeep rides, was found riding a convoy jeep five months after being given up for lost by Lieut. Phil A Adams of the Military Police at Camp Wheeler. A test with a different dog named Wolf led to Ace returning to Adams, who then made him an official member of the MP detachment as a canine cop.
Mrs. Mabel Hines, 39, mother of five, vanished Wednesday from her mother in law's home near Boonsboro with her 4 year old. The Hines family had lived with brother Nick Rudy in Martinsburg. Husband Lemuel Hines, a Navy Yard mechanic, reported missing wife with blond hair brown eyes and 160 pounds. She had recent nervous trouble and wore a dark dress with tan slippers.
Sacramento March 28. Registration of all California students over 15 willing to work in farms and factories this summer will begin April 15 to avert a farm labor shortage. State Department of Education and U S Employment Service cooperate in registration. Students seeking canning and processing jobs must join unions and cover associated fees. Officials say the summer job description should outline both attractive and unattractive conditions.

The London Star's Sydney correspondent says American submarines in the Pacific have sunk five Japanese destroyers, two aircraft carriers, and about 30 transports and supply ships in the last two to three weeks. Five cruisers and more transports were damaged, with all sinkings around Australia. A Brisbane report notes a full Netherlands Indies infantry division arriving, well armed and ready to fight.

Three men and a woman who obtained certificates for new tires failed to use them within the 30 day limit, as required by law, according to records of the local Nation Board.Certificates must be returned for cancellation if not used within thirty days to buy tires and tubes.
Three Netherlanders are sentenced to prison in Holland for spreading reports from United Nations broadcasts and for making anti German utterances, according to Aneta the Dutch news agency.
In Hoboken New Jersey on March 28, FBI agents and police seized 60 to 68 residents at the Seamenhaus Deutsches, known as Seamen's Institute. Detainees were photographed, fingerprinted, and held at the institute or local stations while Ellis Island decisions are awaited. A short-wave radio and subversive literature were found. residents included German seamen stranded by the war.
Work will start next week on 50 new homes in Hamilton Park off Pennsylvania avenue. The city engineering department has set street grades for Asa Watkins development after a plot for Asa Watkins Mt. Bairy Md area filed for 160 homes. Street workers will lay a sewer line and water mains into the development next week.

Australian units returning from Lib a and Malaya are being reformed to join Allied defenders of the homeland. General Blamey says the Japanese are expected to attempt an invasion of Australia as U S and Australian air forces hold at bay in the southwest Pacific.

Certificates issued by the local Ration Board this week cover forty persons or firms for the purchase of new tires and tubes. Mrs. Colin P. Kelly, widow of the pilot famed for sinking a Japanese battleship, starts work as a secretary-stenographer at a war plant in Los Angeles. Eight two gallon cans believed stolen weeks ago from Kline Bros Mill at Benevola were recovered this morning by County Investigator Wayne A Sellman behind a stone wall at Death Curve. A guard at the Fairchild plant spotted the cans while gathering dandelions yesterday afternoon and reported to his chief Captain Noble who advised Sellman. The investigator said the gas was unquestionably stolen from Klines which office has been entered twice this past month.

The Barnharts married in 1934 and have three children. the Ed wards also married in 1934 with two children. the Folks married in 1931 with three children.
The commissions of seventeen additional special policemen for the Fairchild Corporation were received from Annapolis, bringing total on duty to about 300. The new guards include Kilmer D. The broadcast reported a major British force nearing the Indian Ocean within 24 hours after Japanese units were sighted in the waters near the Andaman Islands and Rangoon. The force, passing the Cape of Good Hope, included two battleships, two aircraft carriers, several cruisers and smaller ships. In the Philippines, Lieut. Gen. Wainwright’s American Filipino defenders, despite vast odds, conducted two raids on Japanese invaders on Bataan and Zamboanga 600 miles south of Manila, with patrols penetrating near the city and attacking an outpost as Japanese artillery pounded Bataan.
New Delhi March 28 Sir Stafford Cripps British envoy said he was entirely satisfied with talks with Indian group leaders toward a settlement. He called his Gandhi interview extremely helpful and noted one change in government proposals was made to clarify a sentence. He will stay in India for a fortnight.
Cairo dispatch reports that British imperial patrols operating by day and night have advanced into Axis positions between Tmimi and El Mechili in Libya. No further details were provided by general headquarters.
U S Senator Joseph Guffey withdraws from the Democratic race for governor of Pennsylvania and endorses Judge Ralph H. Smith of Pittsburgh. He pledged active support for Smith and his candidacy.
