William Miller and his neighbor Robert C. Fahrney were involved in a late night shooting in the 1190 block of Corbett Street. Miller refused to prosecute Fahrney, claiming the incident was a minor friendly exchange, and both men were charged with drunken and disorderly conduct plus fines.
The OPA tightened its C gasoline coupon rules to reduce consumption and standardize local boards. The changes place some drivers in a semi-preferred group and restrict others to B rations, with strict tests for essential plant travel and contract based eligibility.
Thirty two Hagerstown registrants departed for Baltimore for pre-induction physicals with swift processing to ensure return in time to vote in the city election. They left earlier than usual to reach Hagerstown before polls close at five.
Russian forces pushed within 20 to 23 miles of Austria on the lower Raba river as the Red Army advanced near Vienna. Soviet reports placed spearheads 31 miles from the Austrian frontier and 69 miles from Vienna, with heavy fighting along the Danube and through western Hungary. The Second Ukrainian army crossed the Hron river toward Nagykallo and reached near the Bratislava gap, while Banska Bystrica fell to advancing units.

His young daughter Martha was struck by a car on West Washington street while holding her brother’s ration book. A dollar bill was dropped with the book and the finder is asked to contact Capt. Churchill.
Pfc Eugene Caldwell son of Mr and Mrs Edward Caldwell of Hancock was wounded in action on February 5. He served with the 38th Infantry Division, enlisted February 1942, trained at Camp Croft and other southern camps, went overseas January 1944. He holds the Expert Infantry Medal and Combat Infantry Badge, wears the Purple Heart, and is convalescing in a New Guinea hospital.
The first of 30 000 American lend lease pre fabricated temporary bungalows have arrived in England to help alleviate the housing shortage.
George Pilgrim and David Embly, both in their early thirties, were accused in city court today after being caught last night hauling 11 copper screens from the old country club property on Elizabeth Street. They posted 2500 bond for the May Grand Jury. Patrolman A C Palmer arrested them as they drove away with the screens. they admitted removing them from a porch. City Detective Wayne Sellman noted the building is being torn apart by thieves, with prior thefts of chairs plumbing fixtures and broken glass reported.
Commander Harold E. Stassen former Minnesota governor, named a delegate to the United Nations conference on organization, returns to Pacific war area to end duties as Fifth Fleet flag secretary, Twelfth District headquarters announced.
Amid spring weather turnout was lighter than expected by noon with at least 15 percent of ballots cast in many precincts. Polls close at 8 p m and officials expect most residents to vote late, with Ward 1 showing 102 of about 900 registered and Ward 4 the heaviest early voting.

Salvation Army opens an emergency room at 324 West Washington Street to shelter stranded women and children and to lodge transient men. In the month ending March 15 about 75 men, mostly servicemen, sought food and shelter, housed in local hotels with bills paid by a secret benefactor.
Arnold W. Miller son of Mrs. Marie Snively of Keedysville was wounded in Germany and is back in combat with his old company attached to Gen Patton's Third Army, resuming frontline duties.
The OPA reports extreme chicken shortages pushing dealers from major Seaboard cities to inland areas like Hagerstown to buy at above ceiling prices and sell on the black market. The Washington County Ration Office warns producers and buyers face prosecution for above ceiling sales.
The War Production Board orders a six percent cut in April newsprint purchases by newspapers in Canada Newfoundland and the United States to cope with a shortage. The measure allows the same April usage as the prior three months but requires suppliers to cover the shortfall from existing inventories.
Mrs. Mary Shifler of Boonsboro has learned her husband, Lt. Roscoe D. Shifler, was slightly wounded in Germany on March 4. He serves with Hodges' First Army and has been overseas for a year.

Vic Oliver, Australian-born U S citizen and British radio and film star, sought a divorce from Sarah Churchill Oliver, daughter of Prime Minister Churchill, in a London court. He testified she deserted him in September 1941 and refused to return despite his request. The couple married in 1935 at the British Consulate in New York. Mrs Oliver, an officer in the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force, did not contest the case.
Allied forces led by Patton push into central Germany with Weilburg and Lohr in range, while Offenbach evacuted. The German defense collapses in Ruhr and Westphalia as seven Allied armies close in on Berlin, with pivotal strikes northeast of Nuernberg and toward Stuttgart.

London dispatch reports Adolf Hitler summoned a special meeting of Nazi gauleiters at Berchtesgaden. A preliminary secret session with close associates without army leaders was held last Sunday, with the Sketch linking these moves to anticipated sensational events in Germany.

Pfc Edward L Wagner son of Mrs Mary Wagner of 327 South Potomac street received the Bronze Star for heroic action in Italy with the Fifth Army. In a German counterattack he and a heavy machine gun partner held their position under heavy fire, repelling the assault and supporting besieged riflemen with pistols and grenades at close range.
