ANNAPOLIS Md March 1 Speaker Emanuel Gorfine urged rapid reporting of local bills and called on members to attend the remaining sessions as 22 days of the 90 day Legislature's term remained before adjournment.
Gorfine noted he asked local delegations to report out their bills and said these requests have met with little response. Five local bills were introduced tonight. The District of Columbia Tennessee and South Carolina are the only U S political subdivisions without marijuana sale laws.
Arthur F. Loewe, noted highway safety lighting expert, will address the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce on March 18 at 7 30 P M at the Hotel Alexander. A live lamp demonstration will show lighting benefits for Route 11 between the city and Municipal Airport. Dr Homer E Tabler and staff plan to attend along with city officials. He will discuss safety gains from highway illumination and answer questions on effectiveness, justification, and applicability to busy highways.
The local Chamber of Commerce invites members to hear Mr. Loewe explain Route No. 11 highway lighting. The talk promotes safety benefits, national expertise, and the potential for Maryland’s first installation, placing Hagerstown at the forefront of safety initiatives.
Baltimore, March 16. Deputy Motor Vehicles Commissioner D. Marshall Schroeder warned that Maryland faces the biggest rush in its history to issue 1937 license tags by the March 31 deadline. Officials cannot explain the procrastination among motorists as 14 days remain to apply. The rate is about one third behind last year. The Baltimore office will be open Buster Blonday but closed Langny next Thursday and Good Friday.
The sixth annual banquet of Charlton Brothers Transportation Company was held at the Charltons country home. Twenty five employees and officers attended with guests W Price Ambrose Severn White and Mr Marks from Baltimore. Charlton praised loyalty and urged cooperation while Ambrose acted as master of ceremonies. White spoke on Thoughtlessness and accident prevention. Chevrolet provided an instructional motion picture shown by Mr Marks.
Huntington reports Charles Baldwin, 41, an attorney and former army captain, stands trial for the October death of Juliette Buffington Enslow, widow of Frank Bliss Enslow. Prosecutors call it circumstantial murder. defense argues a midnight prowler killed her. Baldwin, using a cane with an artificial leg, pleads not guilty as witnesses begin.
Rev. Dr. H. A. Fesperman of Christ Reformed Church spoke to the Frederick County Ministerial Association at the Y M C A in Frederick. He called the minister’s supreme passion the building of God’s Kingdom and winning souls, urging leaders to keep a burning zeal for Christ. Introduced by Rev. A. S. Peeler of Lovettsville, Va., a lifelong friend and North Carolina native.
Seattle reports Police Judge Bell ordering change of no parking sign after motorist F L Wagner defended parking in front of a sign reading no parking from 8 A M to 12 P M. The magistrate admitted uncertainty and Wagner was dismissed, while encyclopedias note no such thing as 12 P M.
Charles McKee was elected president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting held at Hotel Alexander last night. He succeeds J. Vincent Jamison, HI. New officers include Arley O. Sica first vice president, Alex Pryhoda second vice president, Robert Miller secretary, and Paul Ridenour treasurer. They serve until March 1, 1938. The general meeting resumes tonight at the Club with retiring officer reports and plans for the annual dinner next month featuring a nationally known speaker.
