In the dim light of St. Thomas Church Franklin D Roosevelt reconsecrated himself to his patron's welfare in simple communion with his God. Outside, a bright sky and sunlit canopy framed the scene as he attended worship.
The new President and family attended the gray stone Episcopal edifice on the first Sunday in rent and communion. Roosevelt and kin drank from the chalice with the congregation as Dr C Ernest Smith led prayers. The ceremony drew crowds along West Entrance and outside the White House grounds. Indra noted as the great national god Yot Vedic India.
A committee of industrialists, farmers and financiers led by Frank A. Vanderlip urges a government guarantee of bank deposits and a suspension of gold payments. It warns against currency inflation and calls for studying price stabilization by adjusting gold content, with recommendations sent to Congress and the administration.
Mrs. R. A. Purnell is confined to her home with illness. The Rev and Mrs. C. R. Sechrist and daughters Janet and Norma were entertained at dinner at the Eich elberger home. United Brethren Ladies Aid to hold monthly meeting at Mrs Senior Everitts. Mr and Mrs J. N. Snider visited friends in Greencastle and Williamson PA. L G Repp entertained Edith Vermillyea Marie Solis Harold Riser from Baltimore Mary Myers from Hagerstown and Clara Hantings of Bisks Valley. L G Repp and family also hosted.
Toby Cook a seven year old boy from Chula Georgia completed a pony journey to Washington to witness the Roosevelt inauguration. He was greeted upon arrival by Senator Russell of Georgia.
Sunday events in Hedgesville include Big Pool and Indian Springs United Brethren church services with Sunday school at 10 a m and worship at 11 a m in Big Pool and 7 45 p m CE service. Mr and Mrs M J Henesy celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary at home with dinner guests including Jg L Brewer Mary E Brewer Mary Hall and Ruth Franklin. visits among Brewer Widmyer family in Clearspring noted.
The Maryland Theatre drawing a large audience hosted the third concert in the Hagerstown Municipal Band series directed by Peter Buys. Prof. A L Meyers and Prof. M Z Weidner led performances including Lurline Overture and Marche Slav with a descriptive Ketelbey scene In a Camp of the Ancient Britons. Encored by the conductors, the program highlighted the bands past Sousa association and honored guest conductors. A post concert dinner at Dagmer Hotel followed.
Evelyn Brent rose from signing with F B O to fame through a string of crook melodramas. She later joined Paramount for roles as seductive abandoned ladies in The Drag Net Underworld The Mating Call A Night of Mystery and His Tiger Lady. More recent films include Madonna of the Streets Slightly Scarlet High Pressure and Pagan Lady. In The Crusader at Henrys Theatre she plays the wife of the crusading district attorney.
Sylvia Sidney Cary Grant and Charles Ruggles star in a Colonial Theatre presentation of Madame Butterfly a modern take on John Luther Long’s tale about a Japanese geisha and an American officer. The couple wed despite race and custom and face separation when the husband leaves for America. He returns changed to find her still waiting leading to a tender dramatic finale.
Noel Coward's Tonight Is Ours opens at the Maryland Theatre with Claudette Colbert and Frederic March co starring. It marks March's first screen appearance since winning the 1932 Academy Award for best actor. Colbert plays a princess who abandons royal duties for a Parisian fling while March portrays a young man.
Alison Skipworth leads a bright supporting cast as a seasoned stage actress in a lively production about a wealthy Parisian who insists on a flirtation. The piece highlights character work and witty dynamics set against a bustling Parisian backdrop.
Special services continue at the Church of God with Tuesday Bible Class, Wednesday Church night, Thursday Christian Endeavor, and Friday Young People night, excluding Monday night.
