Committee Okays Cuba Sugar Bill
Washington report says the House Agriculture Committee approved a bill giving the president authority to cut Cuba’s sugar quota if needed. Cuba calls it economic war and vows to retaliate. Cuba fixes minimum three cents a pound on sugar for world markets while raw sugar price drops. Fidel Castro warns American property seizures in Cuba in line with any quota cuts. US officials say about a third of American properties in Cuba already seized. The committee previously favored extending the current quota to avoid provoking Castro.

Board Asked for More Jail Guards
The State Jail Inspector advised Washington County officials that three additional guards are needed, increasing the force to six to ensure at least two on duty per shift. He warned that hiring a single guard is unsafe and that the Meeks keys must be carried. Prisoner traffic in 1959 averaged about 60 daily, and only extra guards can prevent a jail break.
