Self taught toy artisan Charles Phetteplace rises at craft fairs
Charles Phetteplace, a Washington County construction former, runs a wood toy workshop in an old Dual Highway building called The Sawmill. He crafts animals, vehicles and pocket toys from dried basswood and pine, with 20 distinct pieces and 39 animal figures in his line, selling at craft shows and in shops along the East Coast. His family helps run booths, handle credit, and support wholesale orders while he pursues new designs inspired by colonial and Bicentennial themes.
