The Louisiana legislature committee confirmed approval for a revived state lottery dubbed world famous in the 1890s. The plan centers on a wheel of fortune style drawing with high winnings and dramatic suits reportedly dominating the era.
Leo Bruce Peck formerly of Hancock was sentenced to 15 years in the Federal penitentiary for robbing a Baltimore and Ohio freight car near Hancock and escaping from Berkeley county jail. He received 10 years for the robbery and five years for breaking jail, with two confederates already sentenced to seven years each.
Reported gunman shoots Patrolman and is pursued by officers including Lieut Edward J Chapman and Officer Hopkins of the Western Maryland. The fugitive eluded capture several weeks, with officers closing in repeatedly. Peck had recently resided in Morgan County West Virginia.
Federal district judge Charles B. Faris ruled that congressional action to abolish the gold clause is constitutional. The decision applies to Missouri Pacific Railroad bonds payable in gold coin, mandating payment at face value in U S dollars instead of gold. The ruling, issued June 21, may be appealed to the U S Supreme Court.
Rev Dr Walter Byron Stehl spoke at the Rotary Club luncheon at Hotel Alexander urging Marylanders to build on Christian foundations laid at settlement. He traced George Calvert from 1578 birth in England through Newfoundland voyages, St James Court, royal charter reception, and his 1632 death, noting Cecil Calvert's succession and heritage.
The text recounts Leonard leading adventurers to the Maryland Province aboard the Tale of Wight thesis from the Ark and the Dove. It notes their arrival and the founding of St. Mary's City on March 21, 1634. Rev Dr Stehl shared the tale, introduced by Dr Crown D. Diehl, president of the club.
Wheat stalks over five feet high with about 41 grains per head were shown at the Herald office. They were grown by Scott Snook on a Broadfording district farm. He believes his crop may average 25 bushels per acre. Snook, once in the blacksmith trade in Indiana, returned to the county forty years ago and acquired the Wareham farm at Halfway. He later bought several farms including his father’s former homestead. Struck by auto near his East Baltimore Street home, nine year old John J. Forsythe, son of Mrs. Olfa Forsythe, suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged from Washington County Hospital.
