Washington June 9 The Cleveland Republican convention may be lively but likely not as dramatic as the 1912 clash between Roosevelt and Taft factions that paved the way for Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt charged party bosses with stealing delegates and staged a dramatic Chicago entrance while Taft backers defended the process. Taft won on the first ballot as Roosevelt followers bolted to form a separate convention nominating Roosevelt with Johnson as running mate. Prominent Republicans from both camps participated, including Henry Allen, Borah, Pinchot, White, Butler, Root, and Depew as images of the era roll by along Michigan Avenue.

Widow of Poet Dies at 80 in Heatford Junction
Mrs. Julia Field 80 widow of Eugene Field died of heart disease two weeks after her Crystal Lake estate was saved from foreclosure by a $3,000 Phi Delta Theta loan. She married the poet in 1873, who died in 1895. The Field estate, valued around 200,000, suffered losses in Chicago real estate.

Hood College Receives Gift for Outdoor Theatre
Hood College in Frederick Maryland announced at commencement it received 6923 to fund an outdoor theatre on campus. The gift comes from the estate of Col Clarence Hodson of theastern Shore, with Hood the only women’s college named among four Maryland schools. Additional gifts include 5000 from L A Meyran and 1000 from the estate of Milton R Strunk.

In Chestertown Maryland on June 9 Dr Gilbert W Mead president of Washington College conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws on H C Byrd head of the University of Maryland. The ceremony marked Byrd as a doctor holder though he had not spoken. Mead praised him as a leader of men and registrar William R Howell credited him with developing the university from the old State Agricultural College.
