Local Youths Graduate At Mercersburg Academy
John Milton Colton of Hagerstown and Jay Newmhan Macht of Hagerstown graduated at Mercersburg Academy in a sixty seventh commencement. Colton joined in 1957 and held roles in multiple clubs including Irving Literary Society, Caducean Club, and Varsity activities. Macht, entering in 1956, was treasurer of Marshall Literary Society, active in bands and debate, and served as associate editor of the yearbook with various clubs and student government duties.

River Tragedy: Two Drowned Father and Son Recovered
Frederick AP report says Daniel Woods 32 and his 10 year old son Alan drowned when a fishing boat capsized last Wednesday in the Potomac near Knoxville. The son’s body found near Edwards Ferry at 9 30 a m and the father’s at 2 p m. Millard Mastrino 19 also from Frederick was rescued after grabbing a tree branch. Police fire and volunteers had searched since the accident amid a swift four foot river. The Potomac run off from heavy rains elevated flood conditions. In other notes a student earned the John K Berger Prize in declamation and Ronald J Taylor won the Waldron Prize at local exercises.
