Hybrid chestnut may revive native American chestnut in Maryland

Dr W A Bell of Frederick Maryland told a meeting of the state Division of the Tank Walton League that developers hope to have releases of a new hybrid chestnut strain within a few years. The Frederick chapter has worked with the USDA Beltsville station for 12 years, grafting Chinese chestnuts onto native stock and cross pollinating. The trees show resistance to blight that has wiped out the native chestnut for 90 years, and the nut is said to match the native in texture and flavor. Governors recreation study asked. outdoor facilities in the state to be studied by a commission appointed by Gov Tavex.
