Democratic leaders seek to mobilize the full House majority behind a tax bill not yet out of the Ways and Means committee. Eighteen Democrats formed a bloc on the committee, defeating Republican amendments as they expect committee approval soon. The measure would raise about 275 million dollars in annual revenues.
James B. Clingan, a milk plant employee, was found not guilty of assault after a hearing in city court this morning. Testimony showed he did not deliberately turn hot water on nine year old Donald Zombro and the burns were minor. Witnesses said the boy and companions played near the plant as Clingan, while washing a platform, turned on water. John J. Allen defended Clingan.
The sale realized 84 cents per share for 1005 shares of Blue Ridge Fire Insurance Company stock in front of the Court House this morning. Col Dallas Ward acted as auctioneer.
Baltimore mourns former mayor J Barry Mahool age 60 died suddenly after fracturing a kneecap in a recent fall at Ocean City and dying of an embolism. He was the citys youngest mayor elected in 1907 and later served on the city council the League of American Municipalities and the State tax commission.
A delegation of Glenside Avenue property owners appeared before the County Commissioners with a request to rebuild the avenue from Virginia Avenue to Funkstown Road this summer. The board took the request under advisement.
The Potomac river runs clear to Williamsport and becomes muddy below Conococheague Creek. Several bass strings were caught yesterday near Williamsport.

President Roosevelt allotted 3 450 000 dollars for a public health service survey of chronic diseases. The plan includes house to house canvasses, selective physical exams, and a facilities survey, with Maryland receiving 111 000 and Virginia 59 500. The project aims to employ 3 500 white collar relief workers for a year. Hopkins said adult education classes would continue under the relief program, with 12 00 teachers at summer schools and about 2 000 000 adults expected to participate.
In Wimbledon on July 30, H. W. Austin defeated Don Budge in four sets 6-2 6-4 6-8 7-5 to give Britain its fourth straight win in the Davis Cup challenge round. The result positions Wilmer Allison of Austin, Texas to face Fred Perry in the final singles, potentially sparing the U.S. from a whitewash.
W. H. Cauffman, manager of a local drug store, sustained a badly lacerated right hand when the porcelain top on a spigot he was turning broke. He received first aid at the scene and was later treated by a physician.
Tokyo reports Manchou kuan bandits held up the Hsinking Tumen express near Hsinking in Manchukuo. 11 or 12 people were slain including a Russian and four Manchoukuans, with five Japanese and three Manchoukuans wounded. Twelve guards were kidnapped as Japanese and Manchoukuan troops moved to rescue captives and pursue attackers.
Leslie G. Chamberlin 22 a traffic policeman and his wife of four months met him while nursing him after an earlier accident. He died last night from injuries suffered in a crash Sunday. His wife was by his bedside nursing him.
A large frame building housing the Poolesville Tavern, post office, and Oliver Soper’s barber shop burned down early today in Poolesville Maryland. Harry Whyte and family fled in night clothes from the residential apartment. Fire units from Rockville and Gaithersburg battled the blaze as stacks and cash in the post office safe were not accessible. The ruined structure, once a famed tavern, had stood as one of the town’s oldest buildings.
Col Dallas Ward, noted auctioneer, harvested 35 bushels of large potatoes from a small garden patch. He says he planted only about a bushel and a peck of certified seed and notes this year’s yield is strong despite little rain. His best previous yield over similar ground and seed was 42 bushels.
Senate lobby committee said many large utilities, including Associated Gas and Electric, have blank files on campaigning. Investigators seek H. C. Hopson, key AG&E figure, as a House probe resumes into utility lobbying. Bernard B. Robinson denied lavish spending while opposing the bill.
Albert Gaylor 53 a well known blacksmith shot himself with a 38 calibre rifle in the kitchen of his Funketown home at 8 30 am. He died at the hospital at 11 40 am from a head wound as his despondency from ill health was noted. Justice John D Dunn acting coroner viewed the body and ruled death by his own action. His wife heard the shot and alerted deputies who aided in his removal to hospital. Gaylor had maintained shops in the city and along Mt Aetna Road.
In Garnett Kansas July 30 a protest by 150 CCC workers over a diphtheria quarantine erupted with the claim officers “got away with it” The crowd was stopped by three county officials near Garnett who warned that any officer breaking quarantine would be arrested County Attorney Merle Loughridge supported equal treatment for officers and men in enforcing the quarantine and urged calm to avert an epidemic.
In Malone New York July 30 the government pressed its income tax evasion case against Arthur Dutch Schultz Flegenheimer as Rocco Di Larmi Schultz henchman received six months in jail for refusal to testify. Di Larmi appeared before Federal Judge Frederick H Bryant as the government closed its case.
Greensboro July 30 David Gunn and John Gilmer two Black men served today on the Guilford County grand jury marking the first time in modern history that African Americans sat on juries in the county.
Mrs. Bernice Higging Stotler, 12, of Little Orleans near Hancock, is the mother of a daughter born July 22 at Memorial hospital Cumberland. Both mother and baby are reported doing well. Irvin E. Stotler, 19, father, CCC member formerly stationed at Little Orleans camp, was first admitted April 6 for a serious operation from which she recovered.
Arthur Bowman former Wagaman farm tenant near Funkstown was found not guilty of assault on Attorney John E Wagaman but guilty of trespass and given a suspended sentence by Justice John D Dunn in City court The two hour hearing included testimony of an argument over removal of goods and a second altercation in which a stepladder fell on Wagaman
In Kansas City on July 30 Mrs Iva Mae Stull of Wichita was shot dead by Frank Bohatch of Great Bend who then killed himself. Her ten year old daughter Catherine Mildred Stull found the bodies and alerted hotel management.
New York July 30. Seismologist Reuben Greenspan forecasts severe shocks in a wide region including Angola Turkey Masul and Bagdad Iraq. Greenspan recently predicted major quakes in the Orient with accuracy.
At Fort Monmouth New Jersey on July 30 officials studied a new "mystery ray" claimed to detect ships 50 miles at sea through fog and darkness. Signal Corps technicians would not confirm nightly tests for spotting ships and airplanes while secrecy shrouded activity.
Phillis Randall, nine, of Maryland Avenue, was pulled from the municipal swimming pool yesterday morning by Edward Hillyard of Pope Avenue when she got beyond her depth and struggled. She recovered quickly and returned to the water.
Salisbury reports well known artist Frank Warren died at Peninsula General Hospital from injuries suffered when his car was struck by a train last Friday at Girdle Tree Maryland.
Addis Ababa July 30 Associated Press reports confirm parts of a revolt by native Somalis in Italian Somaliland in the southeast near the frontier. Italian forces moved from Addis Ababa toward the Somalia border amid strict military secrecy as details remain scarce.
The Health Department announced no infantile paralysis cases in Hagerstown or Washington County. Front Royal, Virginia, remains the nearest center with cases as North Carolina and Virginia see outbreaks. One hundred local children have received Kolmer serum immunization as a precaution.
Baltimore report says Milton W Schlutter legal examiner for the Motor Vehicles commission will raise the minimum license suspension for violators to 30 days from 16 days. The change aims to deter careless driving offenses.
