Police summoned a coroner's jury for 3 pm to inquire into the death of Theodore W. Wasson age 33 at a hospital last evening. He died at 7 pm from a brain hemorrhage after being struck on the head, though physicians say there is no conclusive indication the injuries were caused by a blow. Several witnesses said he fell and was injured. Continued on Page 10.
The Hancock Foundry and Machine Works, a longtime landmark at Hancock, is being dismantled this week. Originating from the C and O Canal power source, it was established sixty years ago by George W. Seyler.
Z N Buzzard, a well known county farmer, corrected a figure from last week stating his wheat yield this year was 27 bushels per acre not 52. He said he would be glad to report such a gigantic yield but doubts it was ever obtained in the county.
The Daily Mail awarded first prize to a Clearspring resident for reporting two youths killed by lightning at Cahill farm within minutes of the event. Second prize split between a North Potomac street resident for an escaped convict tip and a South Cannon avenue housewife for reporting a boy drowning in Antietam Creek. Tips were abundant, with several prize-worthy entries. Weekdays 7:30 AM to 3 PM and weekends accept tips.
Omaha July 29 1930 The romance of motorcycle officer Leslie G Chamberlin and his wife nurse resumed where it began five months earlier. After an injury he married his nurse, returned to duty, and while pursuing a speeder collided. An escort brought his wife to the hospital where she resumed nursing him, with his condition listed as serious.
New York July 29. Charles F. Huber administrator for the anthracite industry reports rapid benefits from self regulation. Eighty five percent of the industry cooperates in a program to end unfair price discrimination secret rebates and unfounded rumors. Leaders say a spirit of hopefulness and a desire to play ball pervades major units with reduced producer dealer suspicions and confidence that past prices and terms will be filed and respected.
Herman Lange of Bellevue avenue suffered a deep gash in his right leg when a motorboat from Middletown Maryland ran over him while he swam in the Potomac River at Shepherdstown. Rescuers ferried him to shore and a Shepherdstown physician gave stitches. Lange works at the Kreidler Reisner airplane plant.
Washington county reports its first case of spotted fever, confirmed by lab tests and the State Health Department. Patient William Ebersole of Sharpsburg is likely to recover. The illness spreads from tick or flea bites from infected small animals and shares typhoidlike features with a higher death rate. Early signs include high fever back pain and severe headache.
An 18 year old farm youth faced a U S commissioner over a $2000 extortion bid that failed after a widow reported a penciled death threat to police. DoJ and a six man machine gun squad helped arrest Curtis J. Tennyson, once of Cash Arkansas, who was employed on Dr T J Connell’s estate. Detective Ray H. Martin said a confession was obtained. Abdiel Garber an 86 year old former Mt Airy resident was struck by a car on a state highway in Thurmont Md while crossing from his daughter's home to a filling station to buy cigars. He died shortly after. James M Weishaar of Taneytown the driver was exonerated of blame by Magistrate William J Soner acting coroner.
T W Hart faces a stranded horse in the C and O Canal at Dam No 4. The animal wandered into the waterway, became mired, and despite efforts was shot after rising water hampered rescue. Today the body was drawn toward the bank and will be hoisted out.
Burglars struck Leiter Bros and Nathan stores in Chambersburg over the weekend. The Leiter store lost cash and merchandise including women’s dresses, with entry by a second story roof window and tools used to force the safe abandoned in the office. The Nathan store loot amount could not be confirmed until the manager returns.
In Chicago a holdup at the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad station ended with a robber and an elevator operator dead and eight policemen gravely wounded. Elevator operator Dan Haskell, 46, blocked the robbers from exiting the lobby drug store and was shot as he held the door. robber Sam Manno, 22, died at Bridewell Hospital after being wounded earlier by police. The band fled with $120, while three others escaped. Detective James Frawley and Sergeant Franklin Smith were wounded during the exchange.
Chestertown reports anglers measuring water temperature to locate fish that respond to weather changes as the summer heat gives way. Some are equipping themselves with thermometers to aid in finding the right conditions for catching fish.
Oklahoma City July 29 Ben B. Laska a Denver attorney was convicted of conspiracy in the $200000 Charles F Urschel kidnapping. He was sentenced today to ten years in prison by Federal Judge Edgar S Vaught.
A Friday rainstorm drenched the Neck below Williamsport with over an hour of heavy downpour. Charles V Ditto's farm suffered extensive damage as water swept away hay ladders, a truck lodged in a tree, wheelbarrows, and much movable property while a calf survived belly-deep in water. Gardens were torn up and fences damaged as the Neck road ran three feet deep in water.
In a Saturday filing, Chief Judge D Lindley Sloan and Judge Frank Wagaman hold stockholders of the People's Banking Company of Smithsburg liable for debts created during their stockholding. They permit applying deposits in the bank to satisfy stock liabilities, clarifying individual responsibility persists beyond stock transfer and is recoverable via the bank receiver for those active at the relevant date.
District Judge O F Goddard of Billings played in the Montana amateur event in Great Falls, finishing two qualifying rounds with 232 for 36 holes. The note adds that John D Rockefeller Sr also plays golf and contributed $6.
New York July 29 The 45 million dollar Goodrich Rubber Co mortgage won approval by a narrow margin at the reconvened stockholders meeting held today.
Annapolis reports the county treasurer will auction 7,000 delinquent tax properties in Anne Arundel County. The sale aims to recoup unpaid taxes and clear titles on the listed parcels. Public notice specifies sale procedures and dates.
Washington July 29 Several congressmen denied that wives nagged them to adjourn. They dismissed a columnist claim of two forces driving votes including sweltering wives and daughters. Rep Sol Bloom said nagging is foolish. Rep Rankin argued weather is hot at home. Rep Binderup said his wife returned home weeks ago. no dirty dishes. Sen Burke and Garner offered cautious remarks on family influence and distractions in Washington.
In Elliston Virginia on July 29 highway engineers rushed to check mysterious caverns eroding the roadside along Route 11. Pits seven to nine feet wide and up to twelve feet deep have opened near the highway in recent days raising fears the road bed could be damaged if openings reach the surface.
Peoria Illinois July 29. The state rested its case against Gerald Thompson 26 charged with attacking and murdering Mildred Hallmark 19. Prosecutor E V Champion offered only minor witnesses and relied on Thompson's 2500 word confession read to the jury Saturday for proof that the dark haired mechanic killed the girl when she resisted him after driving her to a lonely cemetery on June 16.
A shepherd dog named Bob was accidentally locked inside a Fosston, Minnesota, school. Neighbors rushing to the building saw Bob leap onto the teacher's desk and reach the bell rope, triggering the untimely peal as the dog sought a way out.
13 year old William M. Zandyk died after being knocked unconscious by a live wire in Baltimore. He was injured the previous day when he touched a radio aerial that had fallen across a high tension line.
Flood waters the worst here in 22 years sweep through the Hocking river valley causing extensive damage. Unofficial losses top $1,000,000 with 300 homeless in Lancaster where five houses vanished and one man died amid injuries to several others. Claude Carpenter of Lancaster drowned after being marooned on a state route as water rose rapidly and the region evacuated low districts.
The Hancock Volunteer Fire Company sponsors a carnival at the park by the high school, opening tonight and continuing each night this week. The event promises family entertainment and proceeds to aid local firehouse programs.
Secretary Ickes announced that nearly 1.8 billion dollars of Public Works Administration projects were under construction and would provide interim jobs before the 4 billion work relief program peaks. Geneva July 29 A League of Nations circle reports the council may press to the bottom of the dispute with Italy. Emperor Haile Selassie urges a full council investigation under Article 15 while Ethiopia rejects limits on the commission and demands a stricter discussion on frontier issues.
Fred J. Peckman of Scotland pleaded guilty in Chambersburg Saturday to a charge growing out of accepting $60.25 in State relief food orders while having money in a bank. Sentence suspended for six months on condition he repay the money with interest and prosecution costs. Investigation showed Peckman and his wife held a joint bank account totaling $746.
Maryland’s infant mortality declined in the first six months of 1935 versus 1934, with deaths per thousand live births 64 this year and 69 last year. State Health Officer Dr. R H Riley notes heart disease and kidney issues top the death causes, while birth and death totals for the period remain similar to 1934.
