Washington july 1 A rebellion in the House tore at the administration neutrality bill as it sent a version to the Senate with a modified arms embargo. Secretary Hull voiced regret at the repeal failure, calling it a setback for peace and U.S. international interests.
Paris reports that Foreign Minister Bonnet met with the German ambassador for a general talk on Europe. The French cabinet, after a three hour session with President Lebrun, unanimously approved Daladier’s vow to back Poland if Germany acts against Danzig. Daladier reiterated pledges to aid Poland and maintain firm support, with no change in policy. General Gamein canceled a tour amid continuing European tensions.
In East Rutherford New Jersey a sudden flood from a dry drainage ditch swept away four people. Seven year old Arthur linger disappeared first while Sophie Ostopias 11 was pulled into a culvert. Insurance man Louis Pfeiffer and street worker William Steigleman jumped to help and were submerged. Both were rescued as water subsided and searches continued.
The 2 acre Bellevue farm on the west side of Middleburg Pike was sold at a mortgagee sale in front of the Courthouse this morning for 100 dollars per acre. The Hamilton Estate, former owner, purchased the property.

A government reconstruction is seen as part of a broader push to show the Reichsfuhrer that Britain will meet force with force. Churchill, Eden critics of policy, rejoined public life after Eden’s resignation in 1938.
Japanese troops took field positions facing Soviet forces near Lake Bob in Manchukuo as border tensions rose. A belief persisted that another border incident was likely and Tokyo prepared for a retaliation after a Japanese air raid on a Soviet base at Tamsk. A troop train with reinforcements and heavy artillery were dispatched to bolster border defenses.
Maryland and Washington County distribute nearly 218000 in bond retirements and interest. Motorists may park free on Hagerstown streets for Monday and Tuesday, legal holidays. Captain Patrie Cary M. McCleary announced the policy, stating no coins are required at parking meters on those days.
President Roosevelt signed a large relief bill after a drawn out fight in Congress. The measure aims to provide about 2,000,000 WPA jobs monthly for the next year, despite the President's stated objections to several provisions. He said withholding approval would halt relief for the unemployed.

In Fort Wayne Indiana on July 1 Policeman Clifford Kirkpatrick found his car overstayed and wrote himself a ticket. He paid a 50 cent fine at the traffic bureau after taking notes.
An all new Fairchild M-62 trainer was constructed at the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation facility and sent to Dayton Ohio for Army field testing. Pilot Dick Henson and Fairchild executive William Schwebel accompanied the aircraft on its departure.
A replica Rumsey steamship will headline a water pageant for the dedication of the Fotomac River bridge at Shepherdstown on Saturday July 15. Descendants of James Rumsey will sail the replica boat, followed by canoe and motor boat races with prizes of 10 and 5 dollars. Maryland and West Virginia officials will meet at Sharpsburg and Shepherd College respectively for a police escorted crossing, with bands from Hagerstown and Martinsburg. A Maryland National Guard Air Corps contingent will circle the ceremony.

They won a $1.50 banquet for their coin and presented the flowers to a police officer who delivered them to Dempsey in his hospital room while he slept.
Albert Kamens traveled to Galveston to wed Madeline Shamblin but instead wed her twin sister Pauline after Madeline changed her mind. The Shamblin sisters previously resided in Charleston West Virginia.

State police investigated a powerful explosion near Oil City Pennsylvania in a magazine holding 490 quarts of nitroglycerine. The blast occurred shortly before midnight, causing widespread excitement. No casualties reported. No trace of the housing concrete block building was found, leaving the cause undetermined. The site resembled a shell crater about 50 feet long, 20 feet deep, and 20 feet wide.
Police search for a 15 year old girl on a bicycle after she struck 72 year old William F. Dixon in Quincy Massachusetts two days earlier. Dixon died from shock caused by a fractured hip sustained in the collision. Witnesses say the rider remounted and fled the scene.
Washington July 1 A filibuster in the Senate knocked out Roosevelt dollar devaluation powers while a House session produced a neutrality bill opposed by the administration. The setback left administration forces bewildered though they expect eventual victory on the devaluation issue. A House vote to continue a modified arms embargo drew strong opposition. Adjournment in mid July was anticipated as talks on extending powers continued. Tydings of Maryland joined Republicans in talks.
Five young men were tested for their pilot licenses on Thursday when the Federal inspector made his regular visit at the Hagerstown airport and all five passed. Licenses were granted to David Young of Middletown, Walter Brewer, Howard Harrison, Edward Hovis and A B Hoover, all of Chambersburg.
Magistrate Martin Bostetter fined Ralph Davis and Raymond Welsh, both employed by a local produce concern, $15 each for dumping fruit and fish along a county road. Deputy B C Bender led the investigation, and the judge ordered cleanup and warned future offenders they will be required to remove their rubbish.
Woodrow N. Holder has been commissioned as forest warden for the county by Governor Herbert R. O Conor. The commission was received today by Clerk of Court Edward Oswald and outlines a two year term.
