President Eisenhower defended Secretary Wilson amid remarks about dodging or enlistments in the National Guard during the Korean War. He called Wilson's statement very unwise and said Wilson aims to ensure the Guard remains well trained.
Major General Henry K. Fluck, new commander of the Pennsylvania Guard’s 26th Division, warned he will fight anyone who calls a guardsman a draft dodger. He spoke in Pittsburg last night amid remarks about wartime drafts, defense leaders, and a scandal surrounding draft dodging during Korea.

In Alameda California a tanker named Jeanny under refit exploded twice killing nine workers and injuring 50 with 30 in critical condition. Electrician Eugene Fitch said a boom followed by flames swept the area as a gas masked boilermaker Ulrich Kale fled toward the engine room. An investigation is underway amid questions about torch use and fuel fumes.

A head on collision on U S Route 40 east of Hancock killed Robert N Spielman 21 of Big Pool. Two Washington D C men Charles T Gerber 19 and Johnny Russell 21 were injured and hospitalized. Spielman died at Memorial Hospital Berkeley Springs about 10 30 this morning. The crash left the wreckage in a straight stretch with clear forward visibility. Spielman was a salesman and survived by his parents and two sisters.
A reader reports the first robin of the season appearing in the yard at 338 Devonshire Road. Mrs Pleagle notes a large faltering robin in the morning, describing it as a sign of spring and the first sighting after winter, with others possibly nearby.
Larry H. Kreps of Williamsport was sworn as a deputy sheriff. He previously worked for the State Roads Commission at the Williamsport Potomac River toll bridge. Kreps increases regular riding deputies to five, with more to come as authorized by the Board of County Commissioners.
Mrs. John Davis reports a near miss when a car driven by Clara Elizabeth Narle crossed Washington and Jonathan Streets. The vehicle's brakes failed and struck a light pole, narrowly missing Davis who heard the impact and described the moment as frightening. Narle gave an explanation of brake failure.
A father of nine was sentenced today for the tape of a 14 year old girl. Horace Wesley Lang, 47, of Clarksburg, Md. was sentenced by Judge Ida John RF Reeves of Montgomery County Circuit Court.
