From Our Reporters Notebook notes that Hagerstown likely has about 38000 residents within corporate limits based on water and electric meter counts and checks. Census figures show growth varied. 1940 census was 32491 with a 1946 estimate up 5509 in six years, while 1910 to 1920 saw a larger jump.
Seven gunmen robbed Silver's Bath at 4 a m taking 150 steel deposit boxes containing an estimated 25 000 to 50 000 in cash and valuables. They tied the manager Bernie Hellman and two cars waited outside as guests slept on upper floors. Watchman Jack Liebowitz was tied up during the raid near the boardwalk.
Poland Maine January report says 13 year old Jean Anderson told Sheriff he struck his father with a baseball bat to protect his mother during a home altercation. The 48 year old Theodore Anderson died from a fractured skull after the incident. Jean 3 feet 11 inches tall is detained for questioning with no charges yet filed. sister Joan 15 considered striking with a poker but fled.
The Appellate Division orders a new trial in a $5,000 award to Marcia Dale, a 24 year old singer, for shame and mental anguish after hotel staff allegedly broke into her room with her soldier husband. The jury verdict was deemed against the weight of credible evidence as hotel staff testified no marriage knowledge and that the room was rented under her stage name.
Six men and a woman aboard a U S Navy DC-3 transport were injured when the craft overshot a landing field and caught fire. Pilot Lt I Smith of Oakland California and Lt D A Swanson of Jacksonville Florida were described as seriously injured.
Senator O Daniel of Texas told a Senate judiciary subcommittee that portal pay suits must be curbed. He criticized CIO unions over the issue as he urged Congress to act, noting more than four billion dollars in claims since a Supreme Court ruling last June.
Harold H. Hart of 141 South Mulberry street, a 42 month prisoner of the Japs after capture in the Philippines, identified a photo of an American-born Japanese held on the Pacific coast for treason. FBI agents questioned Hart and showed the image. he said the man was an interpreter in the Tokyo camp and had left the United States in 1937 for Japan. Hart added the man claimed he planned to return to the United States.
Weather observer J A Miller reports a Friday high of 63 at Keedysville, beating the month’s prior 60 record set January 11. The low fell to 47, with 44 at 8 am, and clear skies suggest higher temperatures ahead. The 63 mark has occurred before, notably January 24, indicating a trend of warm spells.
The OPA revised rules to ease boosts in hardship cases and avoid a flat across the board rent increase. Officials expect small property owners to gain most, with strong justification required and no break from general rent-control limits. Public discussion with Truman, Steelman, and Fleming preceded any changes.

In Reno Nevada a nine year old, Melvin Roger Lewis Jr., tried to divorce his parents to travel freely. After a bus driver turned him over to police, he returned to Oakland saying Chicago would be his future, though his parents doubted the chance. This was his fifteenth unauthorized trip in two years with stops in Los Angeles and Portland.
The York Optical Company purchased the Morris Kristal pro perty at 139 141 West Franklin Street from Martin V. Bostetter trustee for 27600 dollars. The two story brick building with a large storeroom now houses a restaurant and will be remodeled as York Optical moves from Jonathan Street. The week’s realty market was average in volume and turnover value with total sales near 125000 dollars including transfers such as Robert L Moxley to Herbert F Dewitt for land with improvements in Boonsboro Election District.
George E. Fink of Orchard Road was fined $10 and costs after being arraigned before Magistrate M. W. Bostetter in City Court on a reckless driving charge. Deputy Leister R. Isanogle filed the charge based on a city bus driver's testimony that on January 7 the bus could not pass Fink as he accelerated while southbound on the middleburg Pike. Bus passengers supported the driver, saying Fink’s car would stop then surge forward.
Margaret Crider, through attorney D K McLaughlin, filed a circuit court suit for $25,000 in damages on behalf of her six year old son William Leo Colvin against Robert Elwood Lakin of Boonsboro. The bill states the boy was struck by the defendant's automobile in December 1945 on the Sharpsburg Pike as he crossed the highway homeward. He was badly injured, spent months in hospitals, and is alleged to be deaf in one ear with permanent injuries.
London reports quote Stalin and Bevin as agreeing the Anglo-Soviet treaty remains in force but must be extended only after removing weakening reservations. Stalin noted Bevin’s proposals to extend the 20 year pact to 50 years and said explanations left no room for misunderstanding.
Frederick Md January 25 a trail of blood from the body of a 20 year old man led state police to the body of 15 year old Mary Jane Staud as both were struck by the same automobile while walking home from Evergreen Point near Frederick. Trooper Bruce Bruchie pursued a erratic car and found Miss on the highway then the girl’s body. The driver surrendered at police headquaters and was held without bond as charges await filing.
Manila police uncovered a rusting wreck used as a loot hideout by a pier thief gang preying on merchant ships. Twelve bales of cotton thread worth 3750 dollars were found aboard the wreck, as a search of 300 ghost vessels in the harbor followed charges against two customs employees for tossing the bales into the bay from the Niantic Victory.
Baltimore reports Dr Milton J E Sennit says it is perfectly right to cuddle and coo at babies and feed on the infant schedule. He warns American culture fears spoiling and urges occasional comforting to prevent emotional distress and later behavior problems. The remarks came at a Maryland nurses gathering concluding sessions of state nursing associations.
Capone remains alive on oxygen at his Palm Island villa in Miami Beach as doctors report a stroke and pneumonia in both lungs. Dr. Arthur J. Logie doubts recovery, saying his lungs are largely filled and duration is uncertain.

A Philippine Airlines C-47 carrying 15 million dollars in gold crashed ten miles from Hong Kong. The two engine plane departed Manila for Hong Kong with no passengers and a four man crew. Manila announced it would dispatch two search planes after the last radio contact.
Police report a break in at the West Washington Street school with a window damaged and tools stolen from a car. A tavern near Boonsboro also reported theft of money from a man, while a door window on the building’s west side was found broken but no additional items identified.
