Viet Cong guerrillas swept toward Tam Ky as a 4 day truce began amid fighting. Reports say civilians and refugees were killed and huts burned while allied forces kept alert. Cease fire to start 12 noon Thursday and run until Sunday evening with ongoing operations by American and allied troops.
President Johnson formally asked Congress for an extra 12.3 billion to fund the Vietnam war, aiming to raise U S forces to about 3.08 million. The request, sent to Speaker McCormack, would add 113 000 Army and Marine personnel and 94 000 civilian staff, with most troops to the Army and Marines and some to the Air Force and Navy.

She was daughter of Susan Carr and John Charles and member of St John s United Church of Christ and local auxiliaries. Mrs Carrie Edith Martz of Boonsboro widow of John F Martz died Tuesday at Springfield State Hospital after lengthy illness. J Roy Kuhn 76 of Marion died at Chambersburg Hospital after six days in frail health. Born in Antrim Township near Kuhn s Bridge he was the son of the late Russell and Sarah Belle Wagner and a member of Otterbein U B Church Greencastle Ia. He was a Sunday school teacher and a Men s Brotherhood of Missions member. A former Rhodes Jamestown Ground board member and Marion Fire Company member he retired from Western Maryland Rail as a machinist in the Hagerstown shop. Survivors include wife Ruth Gaines Kuhn son Willard Kuhn Hagerstown stepdaughters Kessner Snyder and Edward Harmon Marion stepsons Stanley Gift New Windsor Md George Fit Fayetteville Rt 1 sisters Clema Kuhn Mrs Clifford Martin Mrs Ray Senseny Miss Alma Kuhn all of Chambersburg and four step grandchildren.
