Federal half billion plan to remove 6000 grade crossings
Washington January 16 officials advanced a half billion dollar grade crossing elimination program as part of the administration effort to trim relief rolls. Plans, drawn by railroad engineers, would eliminate 6000 crossings and could be started immediately using the four billion dollar appropriation. Officials said the program would create work for city and rural unemployed and could be self liquidating as private employment rose. Secretary of Public Works Yekes noted a tax plan to repay costs via motorists and railroads. Broader proposals include a nationwide road modernization effort with super highways linking major regions.

Several active Maryland Appalachian Trail Club members were guests of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club of Washington D C on a Sunday hike into the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. The Hagerstown delegation included Hilton Long, Herbert Robertson, Elliott Haines, Carlton Schuller and William Niemeyer. They traveled to Panorama Va and hiked to Sexton Shelter where an excellent repast was served.
