President Roosevelt urged Congress to pass a national service act to ensure right worker numbers for war needs, prove total American effort to fighting men, and counter Nazi and Japanese aims. He warned manpower shortages hinder critical production and pressed for action at the earliest possible moment.
President Roosevelt maps a peacetime plan centered on private enterprise, tax reform, social security expansion, jobs near sixty million, and airport and highway building. He calls for freer global trade, government support for risk in new production, and modern arms for French forces as allied aid continues.
Front dispatches describe heavy German armor concentration around Budapest with about 300 tanks in action. Soviet forces push from two escape routes toward the new battle area while garrison units hold key heights north and west of the city. The Budapest garrison, especially in Pest near the Danube, is said to be shrinking as red army advances press the defense. Prisoners claim the garrison commander warned that soldiers abandoning their posts would face execution for treachery.

Baltimore and Ohio Railroad announced that in 1944 it carried more passengers and freight for longer distances than ever before. Vice president C. W. Van Horn said passenger receipts reached an all time high, and record gross, net train loads and loaded car dispatchments from terminals were broken.
Washington county nears the Series E bond quota at 850000 with 839375 sold, while total war bonds in the Sixth War Loan reach 3438828 by Dec 31. Bond Chairman John D Hollyday praises county results and notes continued sale at post offices and banks with potential to meet targets.
Three cases of rabbit fever occurred in Washington county during December 1944, with one case in Hagerstown city and two in the county. The December report also notes seven malaria cases outside Hagerstown, heavy scarlet fever with 14 cases, and venereal diseases totaling 20 cases including 12 syphilis and eight gonorrhea. other diseases listed include chickenpox measles mumps pneumonia tuberculosis whooping cough contact dermatitis and Vincent's throat. Allied forces report continued German pressure around Bastogne with 21 counterattacks over two days as Third Army units withdraw to shorten a wedge front. American troops shift to high ground two to two and a half miles outside Bastogne amid fog ice and cold. A second item notes Madison Bell of Georgia Navy Pre flight promoted to full commander in Navy Reserve.
More than a million manhours without a lost time accident were logged by Fairchild Aircraft employees during a safety campaign. Special safety efforts were emphasized, and female workers wore safety caps now a common sight on local streets.
