Maryland could grow its own holiday trees says official

State Forester FL W Besley says Maryland could supply Christmas trees from 1,000 acres, doubling to 2,000 acres for statewide needs. He notes most trees now come from northern states and Canada, with balsam fir favored locally. Growing Christmas trees on idle land could be profitable, combining tree growing with forest management. Fire losses in the tree-growing area were low this season, with the largest fire burning 186 acres in Garrett County.
