American parachutists and Filipino guerrillas liberated 2 146 Allied and co belligerent captives from Los Banos civilian internment camp near Manila. The 1 500 strong airborne and Filipino force evacuated 1 589 Americans and 457 other nationals, with two rescue casualties.
Washington county Agricultural Agency announces six district meetings starting March 5 to discuss the 1945 farm labor outlook and the 1945 agricultural conservation program. Jacob M Ankeney, chairman of the Washington county committee of the Agriculture Conservation Association, says the sessions aim to help every farmer, member or not of the AAA. Meetings span East and West Hagerstown Sharpsburg Boonsboro Clearspring Lansdowne area schools and halls with dates March 5 6 7 8 9 and 12 at 8 pm.
A deer wandered into Cumberland's business section yesterday. Police suspected the animal came from Will's Mountain and chased it to divert traffic, but it eluded officers and vanished behind the Cumberland Brewing Company plant.
In Intramuros three regiments solidified the push to clear Manila as Gen Douglas Macarthur announced American forces seized a second island, Biri, to secure the San Bernardino Straits. Civilians trapped inside the ancient walls suffered brutalities amid the chaotic siege and rubble.
The prosecution failed to start within the two year limit, so an indictment charging Cecil Shoemaker with bastardy was dismissed by State's Attorney Martin L. Ingram in circuit court. Shoemaker, born October 1342, had not been indicted until this term and had been in the Army when the matter arose. Thomas E. Carter pled guilty to larceny of $200 from Neibert's Grocery, with about $120 recovered. Carter had worked at the grocery and knew where the money was hidden. Howard FB, Rice, Eugene Hutzell and Charles Garrett Hadley were found guilty of non-support. Continuous detail continues on Page 8.
Frederick county delegates to the General Assembly agreed there was no complaint about raising salaries for the Burgess and three commissioners of Myersville from 15 to 25 dollars annually. The bill also would authorize a clerk for the council at 33 dollars a year.
In Kansas City a lunchroom proprietor used one hand on the cash register while holding a 10 month old girl in the other arm. He offered to tend the baby if someone would take care of the child, comparing it to a bargain. In Washington, Mrs. Ralph Young was notified by the Navy that her stepson, Lt. Harry Fahmey Young, age 47, was among 17 killed in an airliner crash in southern Virginia.
A stewardess named Sarah Padgett is pictured as one of five survivors from the American Airlines liner crash into a Virginia mountainside yesterday. The disaster killed seventeen passengers and crew.
Five injured survivors, including a barefoot-walking woman, emerged from the wreck of an American Airlines plane in southern Virginia. The crash on Glade Mountain left 17 dead after the emergency landing field report of mechanical trouble. Survivors were identified as Frances Ulen, Sally Padgett, Leonard Rice, Erwin Schwartz, and F. L. Middaugh, with discovery after a 500-person search.
The administration plans to test the Senate's temper on Henry Wallace's nomination before aiming to confirm Aubrey Williams as head of the Rural Electrification Administration. Wallace faces a March 1 Commerce secretary vote, with Williams likely blocked by Agriculture Committee opposition. Allied forces led by the Marines push from the airfield toward the island center after breaking three days of deadlock. Advancing under heavy fire, they secure ground, with over 700 Japanese killed and supplies increasing on the beaches as combat continues.
United States air forces based in India conducted a major raid on Singapore, a key British fortress in the region. The 20th Bomber Command led by Brig. Gen. Roger M. Raney released details of the attack with unclear results, marking the second strike of the month after prior raids in November and January.

The local real estate market saw an active week with numerous transactions totaling near 100000. Buyers include R Mark J. Younker et al selling to Charles Edw. Baker and wife in Hancock and other settlements such as Carrie F. Barnett to Jeremiah Barnecord at 138 East Washington Street for 4160 and 40 acres in Smiths burg District sold for 4000.
Eggs were down to 38 cents a dozen and extra plentiful on the city market this morning. Fort that hens are at peak production and still lower prices can be anticipated. Touches of spring in blooming forsythia and willow branches brightened the market. Foodstuffs generally were in abundance.
Hagerstown’s Warren Dofflemeyer recalls two defining moments. He earned the Bronze Star for courage in the Hurtgen Forest and recounts a boyhood dream to become a jockey with friend Strap MacKenzie. He spent 48 days as an exercise rider on Maryland racehorses before quitting to help his family.

Some try to secure a “guardian Jew” by offering food, wine, and clothing to Jews or Jewish blood, hoping they will be sheltered when the end comes. The February Frederick County grand jury urged longer sentences for habitual drunks to curb rising intoxication. Acting State's Attorney William A. Storm cited increases in chronic intoxication and support from law enforcement. The proposal would sentence chronic drinkers to the House of Correction rather than jail and include a work mandate to avoid idle confinement.
Handy FARRAGUT Idaho February 24 Albert O Seagle hospital apprentice first class of West Frankfort Illinois claims a record for quick treatment. He was standing near an operating table in a Palau island field hospital when a Nazi sniper’s bullet struck his leg. The time buckled and Seagle fell on the operating table. Three seconds later other hospital corpsmen gave first aid.
Mrs. Rira Myers of Hancock fractured her hip in a fall at home Thursday night. She lay on the floor alone until neighbors summoned help, and she was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment.
Paris reports U S troops attacked Cologne’s approaches ending a two army push that overran 17 towns and reached up to three and a half miles beyond the Roer river. The operation struck deep into Germany’s western defenses as 19 miles from Cologne.
Allied forces push from Linnich toward Dueren and Duren while Patton’s and Army units drive toward Trier and the Moselle. Eisenhower signals a major offensive with 40 divisions in action. US efforts cross the Roer river, take Niederzier, and advance toward Muenchen Gladbach and Cologne amid stiff German resistance.
London dispatch reports Adolf Hitler sent a message to Nazi guards for the 25th anniversary of Nazism stating Germany is an unshakable community of people. Berlin radio and DNB cover the reading of the message by Secretary Esser at Munich. He warned bolshevism must be beaten by strength of arms.
Spritz returned to Washington county after touring the South last week as temperatures fell to 29 degrees, three below the normal. The brief cold snap gave way to a forecast of fair, chilly weather today with mild conditions and sunshine expected tomorrow.

General Eisenhower stated the aim of the offensive is to destroy the northern army on the front west of the Rhine opposite the Ruhr and he believes this will be achieved. Rover M Carpenter of Hagerstown earned a Navy Reserve commission as part of Duke University’s graduating class.
Gevise Updegraff was elected to the Hagerstown Board of the Salvation Army at the annual meeting and election of officers held this week at the Hotel Hamilton. All officers were re-elected for 1945 and new board members present include C. Mitchell Fockler, Mrs. Gladys Coffman, Luther Spangler, Mrs. A. C. Barntart, Max Greenwald, Mrs. Keller, Frank B. Leiter, Leister Stobley, George Updegraff, Mrs. Rey Phillip Norman Reed, Willis. George T. Tyford, Clara W. Wachter, A. Harry Warne, Fred Wright Sr, and Captain John G. Churchill.
