King Leopold III acts swiftly after enthronement by confirming the current cabinet and signing a bill extending amnesty to many military convicts in defined categories. An official directive orders courts and authorities to act in the name of the King as Belgium begins a nation wide tour with Queen Astrid.
Washington reports the Federal Food and Drug Administration seized 499 cases of Old Grand-Dad whisky shipped from Louisville to Chicago by the American Medicinal Spirits Co. The agency labeled the product grossly misbranded and said whiskey has stimulant value but cannot cure influenza bronchitis malaria typhoid or ulcers.
Montreal Fel. 24. Fond uncles and aunts gather around a new baby to judge if he has his grandfather’s nose. Dr Antonio Barbeau, assistant superintendent of Bordeaux hospital, tells a nurses convention that every baby has a round or hutton nose, and noses differ.
Washington counties will receive 5004 dollars from charity racing receipts as ordered by Governor Ritchie in a letter to Attorney General W P Lane. The funds, soon due, will be handed to the Washington County Welfare Federation for distribution to needy residents. The state designates charity days at racing meetings, with receipts divided proportionally among counties.
In Mexico City on February 24, Central American students urged President Juan B. Sacasa of Nicaragua to condemn the assassination of General Augusto Sandino calling it a disgraceful crime of Latin American tyrannies.
Washington County hosts three NRA meetings as a Maryland test case with Arthur Hungerford leading sessions for employers women and workers. The local chamber invited 185 employers for a 12 15 PM start at Hotel Alexander with later 2 30 PM women’s session and 7 30 PM union and nonunion worker discussion at Moose Hall. Director Hungerford will field questions on NRA during the events.
In Uniontown Pennsylvania a man named Pambani Chechetti is released from jail after neighbors and the victim's father push for his release. He is described as the breadwinner and caregiver for five children including a wife who is disabled. The shooting of Louise Morgan was ruled accidental and Chechetti had faced a manslaughter charge.
Representative Cannon of Wisconsin introduced a bill to bar honorary titles such as Colonels Generals and Majors awarded to film stars and other celebrities lacking army or navy service. He cited Marion Davies Reed Daniels and Will Rogers as examples of celebrities flaunting titles.
CHICAGO February 24 Basil Banghart under indictment for kidnapping international speculator John Factor will not go on trial immediately. Assistant prosecutor Wilbert F Crowley announced Banghart was captured in Baltimore recently. The state's attorney's office hopes Charles Tee Wagon Connors and Frank Porky Dillon, other alleged members of the Touhy gang under indictment for the abduction, will be apprehended soon.
Elmer Halderman alias George Vincent faced a jury in circuit court on charges of breaking into the Coca Cola Battling plant on January 27. He acted as his own counsel in jury selection and questioned witnesses while officers testified they tailed the pair hours before the break in. The defense highlighted prior police knowledge of the robbery and Halderman’s criminal history. Police testified they found a soap piece, flashlight, pliers, two dynamite caps, and a nitroglycerin bottle near the plant. Halderman’s companion had parole violations and was returned to a penal institution in Ohio.
Washington report notes American Railway Association data show revenue freight loadings for the week ending February 17 at 598,856 cars, up 26,292 from the prior week and 26,631 higher than 1932 levels, with a 3.7 percent rise from 1983.
Tokyo February 24 Foreign Minister Kohi Mizota urged the House of Peers that the United States and Japan pursue diplomatic action to avoid war mindedness. Hirota suggested a Pacific sphere division could be discussed with American recognition of Japanese dominance in the Western Pacific in exchange for American supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. He cautioned against parity demands at the naval conference and stressed Japan seeks only self defense and peace in the Orient.
Eight aboard a United Airlines transport are feared dead as a blizzard engulfed the search area east of Salt Lake City. The plane, with five passengers and three crew, departed Salt Lake City for Cheyenne at 2 p.m. yesterday and has not been seen since passing Frawley’s Canyon near the city. Local reports say a Japanese foreman saw a frantic call for directions and the craft earlier skimmed near Emery Utah before vanishing in worsening conditions.
The day opened with two above zero as the low across the area. Chewsville reported seven above at 7 am while Frostburg logged four below. Snow yesterday plus hazardous mountain travel. Annapolis fell to thirteen below in the morning.
In Philadelphia a diner with no money hanged himself in a restaurant washroom after eating a beef slice, pie and coffee. A staffer found him and he was rushed to hospital where doctors warned death seemed likely.
Dr. Sarah Ruth Dean, 33, accused of poisoning her admirer Dr. John Preston Kennedy, sobbed convulsively in court after four weeks of testimony. Defense counsel cited illness and mounting strain as she remained at the trial, which began a month ago.
Geraldine Greer five years old died after a horse kicked her in the head at the Welcome Maryland home of her parents Carlisle and Mrs Greer. The accident happened as the father stabled the horses and the child wandered outdoors unseen. A hoof imprint was found on her head.
Robert Smith Soles, McKeesport businessman and former Army captain, was acquitted today of slaying his wife Mrs. Laroux Soles in Pittsburgh. The verdict ends the high profile murder trial that drew local attention.
Alton H. Greeley, 62, president of the American chain of warehouses and a descendant of Horace Greeley, died last night in Cleveland.
James Dayhoff of Fiddlersburg was found guilty of manufacturing liquor for sale under the new state law by Judge Frank G. Wagaman in circuit court this morning. The defense argued the statute did not prohibit manufacture for sale. evidence showed a still and mash were on site and Dayhoff admitted producing it.
Mrs Varina Howell Davis Hayes Webb granddaughter of Jefferson Davis died last night in Colorado Springs. The report notes her Confederate presidency lineage and marks the end of an era linked to the Civil War era.
The outlook says the week starts with snow for the north and rain or snow for the south. It will be moderately cold early in the week with rising temperatures on Thursday and Friday. By the end of the week conditions turn slightly cold again.
Wickenburg Arizona February 24 a desert highway crash killed at least six Mormon church workers and injured many more while a bus carrying 35 passengers to California overturned near Aquila after visiting the Mesa temple six or seven bodies identified including Mrs Chester D Mac Arthur and others returning to Home Gardens California. Hospitals strained as rescuers battled rain and darkness with Mesa officials arranging for the dead and injured to be transported there when possible.
In Chicago on February 24 a motion for a new trial for Roger Touhy, Albert Kator, and Gustav Schaefer, convicted Thursday of the $70,000 John Factor kidnapping, was denied by Judge Michael Feinberg.
The American embassy in Havana reports 78 sugar mills grinding in Cuba with 10 more to start soon. It notes favorable progress in negotiating a new Cuban US commercial treaty.
Russell A. Koons, 34, charged with the murder of his wife Catherine Maugans Koons, will face trial Monday morning in court. State's Attorney J. Lloyd Harshman announced. Koons is held on bond and will be represented by former State Attorney D An gle Wolfinger. A jury is expected.
Washington reports Department of Commerce statistics show automoble sales leaping from 84,152 in December to 161,006 in January. The January total leads prior years with about 36,000 more units than January 1933 and over 46,000 more than January 1932.
