Grand jurors reported six cases with insufficient evidence or other reasons leading to no indictments. They noted the Washing County Jail cleanliness issues, recommended consideration of new floors on the second floor, and commented on county fund stewardship. The grand jury thanks State's Attorney Charles F Wagaman for courteous cooperation and congratulates Judge Joseph D Mish on his elevation to the Fourth Judicial Circuit bench It pledges to serve the people with distinction Foreman C Hunter led the panel as it notes the early arraignment of indicted prisoners set for Saturday at 10 am Criminal court opens next Thursday.
The mayor and council approved a plan raising pension to 25 percent of final pay for fire and truck operators, with retirement at 65 after 15 years service or earlier for medical disqualification or disabling injury in service. Kenneth A. Myers named driver to replace the late Charles W. Harrison effective Feb 15. Council also discussed airport water line delays, opened several street projects, ordered an audit of market house books, and received a petition to extend city water to Cedar Lawn with 20 potential customers willing to pay the usual rate.
Judge Edward Delaplaine of Maryland lauded Abraham Lincoln’s kindness and quest for honorable peace and universal justice at the Hagerstown Kiwanis Club Lincoln birthday meeting held at Hotel Alexander. Gratitude to Lincoln was echoed by guests including Judge Mish and the Eckert family, with a musical program provided by Shockey Furniture Co and Solo Vox.
Work began this week on a new Alling filling station and shop for Ludwig Motor Service Inc located at 140 Summit Avenue. Augustus Ludwig serves as president. The single story building measures 49 by 50 feet with a wing and five rooms including office storeroom tire shop walk and lubrication room. It will be cinder block and stuccoed with a modern design and up to date equipment.
In Reedport Oregon on February 24 an attorney Lieut Wallace Benson dropped a one-pound shell from a French battlefield that served as a paperweight. The shell exploded wounding Benson in the abdomen mangled his arm and other injuries. The blast wrecked the office and he is expected to recover.
Earl ing B. Marshall a 40 year old house painter from Laurel Maryland died after being struck by automobiles on the Washington Baltimore boulevard in College Park Maryland. He was hit while one car narrowly missed him and a second car collided as it tried to avoid the first.
Reported rivalry over most sets of brothers in service centered on Armories units. Company B, 115th Infantry, in Frederick, leads with nine sets including two triplets. Officers calculated names: Mentzer, Hawbaker, Bussard, Eberly, Nowell, Blair, Churchey, Jones, and others. Men prepared for a hike under Lieut Bussard and drilled with Garand and Springfield rifles.
The legislature debated shifting to a five day week while a revenue plan proposed offsetting a tax reduction on assessable property. Opposition argued current classified tax harmed the poor, as hearings on related measures continued. Budget pressures and unemployment coverage changes drew focus alongside defense bills and an antisabotage measure.
Members of Company B, 115th Infantry, stationed at the local Armory, will pack and head to Fort George C. Meade Maryland within a week. Maj. Gen. Milton A. Reckord ordered all division units at home Armories to report for duty at the fort. The move, affecting Maryland Virginia and Pittsburgh troops, follows assurances housing and hospital facilities would be ready.
The long established Chinese laundry on South Potomac Street, begun over fifty years ago by Yee B. Deu, was closed yesterday for remodeling into a new enterprise. Residents recalled Deu arriving fifty years ago and riding the first nickel plated Crawford bicycle. Clerk Edward Oswald remembered he was a fine cook.
A crowd of women protesting the administration's aid-to-Britain bill outside the Senate chamber was broken up by Capitol police. Three officers escorted Mrs. Mynnie Fischer of Milwaukee, leader of the Mothers Mobilization Committee Against War, from the Capitol as the session adjourned. Her group carried American tags and urged Senators including Peper of Florida to oppose the aid.
Monterey Calif Feb 14. Laddie a aging canine mascot died at the Army Veterinary Hospital following cross country reunion with Private Everett Scott after a 2000 mile flight. Capt R O Scott Fort Ord veterinary chief aide witnessed the death and expressed sorrow. Transfusions from Winkey the fort’s other mascot aided Laddie in recent days. Nearly 260 people attended Laddie’s arrival and service at the fort. Influenza and pneumonia caused by Census data show higher death rates among negroes than whites.

A district proposal offers demonstrational conservation camp farms in Washington County. Farms of 150 to 200 acres would house 25 enrollees with two leaders, run as self supporting agricultural education sites. Church Councils fund land and buildings while Soil Conservation Service staff aid management and education.
