Senators Welcome Federal Gas Price Probe

Senators O Mahoney and Magnuson said they welcome a forthcoming federal grand jury investigation into recent price increases in oil and gasoline. O Mahoney, chairman of a joint antimonopoly subcommittee, called the inquiry helpful as prices rose about 75 cents a barrel for crude and one cent a gallon for gasoline. Magnuson, head of the commerce committee, noted a separate subcommittee study of gas oil price increases.

Service News: William J. Paden joins 54th Antiaircraft Battalion

William J. Paden, son of Mrs. Irene K. Paden of Boonsboro and husband of Gloria of Middletown, Md., has been assigned to Battery C of the 54th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion at the Army Chemical Center, Md. A radar operator, he enlisted last October and was last stationed at Fort Jackson, D. C. He attended Shepherd College before entering service.

Two Improving At Hospital

Clarence C. Brezler of 324 North Mulberry continues to improve at the hospital after gall bladder surgery last week. City Councilman Jacob Vorous, stricken a week ago, is much improved and expected to be home in a few days.

Conservation Plan Sign-Up Under Way In Maryland

Maryland farmers may sign contracts to place cropland in the Conservation Reserve Program through March 15. Leonard C. Burns notes requirements: land must be eligible, no double participation, acreage reduction equal to CR acres, and compliance with farm allotments. Contracts span three to ten years based on existing cover and forestry practices, with initial payment up to 80 percent of costs and annual payments around 12 dollars per contracted acre in Maryland.

John D Crawford Former Resident Dies Suddenly at 63

John D Crawford formerly of Hagerstown and a noted Baltimore County bridge engineer died unexpectedly yesterday after collapsing at his Towson office en route to a hospital. A native of Rockville Md he was 63 and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology civil engineering graduate. Surviving are wife Margaret Burford Crawford a son Lt Col John D Crawford Jr and daughter Mrs Chester A Grabarek of Aberdeen Md. He belonged to the Engineering Society of America and attended Mercersburg Academy. Also noted are local social items: Mt Lena the Spot dance and a shotgun shooting event by the Western Md Sportsman's Club scheduled for Feb 10.

Lawmakers Hear Grim Figures On Route 40 Modernization

Maryland legislators and the State Roads Commission faced a chaotic four night review of the 12 year roads program. Costs have risen from 68 to about 1 billion dollars, construction lags by about a year, and only 747 of 1262 planned miles may be ready in the first four years. Federal aid remains uncertain, potentially 296 to 464 million, depending on Congress.

Two men were jailed for failing to support their minor children after hearings before Juvenile Court Magistrate Evan Crossley.
