The Pairchild Packers will play the McGuire Veterans Hospital wheelchair basketball team from Richmond, Virginia, at the State Bravory on Saturday night February 16 to benefit the Heart Fund. A packed house is expected.
In a tense NBA showdown the Hawks erased a 12 point deficit late in the fourth as Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan led a 12 0 run to beat the Syracuse Nationals 112 110. Pettit scored 31 and Schayes added 29 for the Hawks while Dolph Schayes led Syracuse with 29. The game swung on a late scramble for playoff positioning in the Eastern Division with only seconds remaining.
Hagerstown’s North and South Hagerstown squads travel to Frederick and Williamsport for CVAL games while St. Maria Goretti hosts Hancock at the State Armory. North Hagerstown seeks revenge after a rare conference loss, South Hagerstown aims to extend a 3 game win streak, and Goretti eyes an upset as Hancock visits for a home-and-home note.
The Wagerstown Y wrestlers host Galludet College on Saturday night at 8 in the gym. Eight weight classes from 123 pounds to unlimited will be contested with possible exhibitions. Florindo Vieira of New York im Quinnipiac led six small college players averaging over 30 points per game as NCAA Service Bureau reported. Vieira rose to first from third after a 68 point game against Brooklyn Polytechnic Sunday night, boosting his scoring average to 35.2.
Touring professionals in Tucson for the Tucson Open are sending a gift fund of $1,000 to Evans of Michigan. Bosslink of Grassinger New York told reporters Evans, long a circuit veteran, has undergone two serious operations and is not yet recovered.
The Harlem Globetrotters visit Sheaten South Hagerstown High Thursday night February 14 for an exhibition game against their traveling teammates. A 1,400 fan turnout is expected with a four-act halftime floor show starring Mike Pickering and other jugglers, acrobats, and table tennis champions. Tickets remain at North, Magerstown, and the Jewel Box in Public Tantl.
North Carolina, Duke and Maryland compete in spring football drills as ACC rivals begin semi finals. Barbara Fin and Polly Riley lead Palm Beach area prep teams while Virginia and Maryland start workouts soon, setting the stage for next season.
