Reed Smoot Dies Aged 79 In Utah Senate Legacy Ends

Reed Smoot of Utah, one of the Mormon Church twelve apostles, dies after a lingering illness at Salt Lake City at age 79. He served in the Senate from 1903 to 1929, chaired the Finance Committee, and helped push the Hawley tariff bill through. Funeral services are planned for Salt Lake City with burial in Provo.

Large tax refunds totaling 65 million reported

Washington February 1 tax refunds for the 1920 fiscal year totaled 65,226,738 with one $888 to former Vice President John N Garner. J P Morgan of New York received 435,503 and the Aluminum Company of America 2,281,492. Secretary Morgenthau and Mrs Morgenthau got 4,089. Sonja Henie received 6,381. Ganna Walska McCormick 15,859.

Twenty Appeals Heard by Western Maryland Board of Appeal

Western Maryland Selective Service Board of Appeal met at Hagers Town City Hall and heard twenty appeals from registrants classified by local boards in Allegany Carroll Frederick Garrett Howard Montgomery and Washington counties. The board affirmed many classifications and reversed some. Final action was held on several cases and one appeal was withdrawn for reclassification. The next meeting was scheduled for March 1.

False lead in Raleigh Poffenberger slaying investigated

Sheriff Baker said a claimed clue that a hired slayer was paid 2000 dollars proved unfounded after checks in Franklin County Pennsylvania and Frederick County Maryland. Poffenberger was killed last October on his Keedysville farm, his skull crushed by a large wrench. Initial suspects were interviewed but had perfect alibis.
