Police report a street gang linked to a string of robberies in Pittsburgh over the past two years. Authorities say several members admitted handling safes and stolen goods from shops and stores, with about 200 watches cited among the loot. The prosecutor notes most safes opened belonged to local businesses.
Police describe a series of robberies by the Hob gang targeting express, railroad and telegraph offices and chain stores. Loot per raid ranged from 25 dollars to over 1,000 dollars. James Grierson claimed to have fought with officer Culp at Gettysburg's Western Maryland Railroad office, being wounded in the thigh before escaping with his companion.
Rotary members heard Isaac B. George explain the Maryland Council of Defense and Resources during a Hotel Alexander talk. He outlined the defense structure from national to local levels, detailing accomplishments, plans, and citizen roles in a two way communication system via the National Defense Advisory Commission and state channels.
The speaker highlighted 241 labor disputes under the N D A C since inception, all settled without time loss except two cases totaling nine days. He praised production gains and cost control, urging intelligent constructive criticism and broad cooperation to preserve a free America while temporarily easing some normal habits and privileges.
A bill introduced by Speaker Thomas Conlon and 20 delegates in the Maryland Legislature would require any employer handling or preparing food or milk for humans to meet health standards including annual blood tests. Employers must not hire workers with trachoma tuberculosis syphilis gonorrhea open cancer or barber's itch and those currently afflicted must be removed immediately.
Secretary of the Navy Knox said Greece refused a free supply of 30 planes from the USS Wasp citing preference for new or already ordered British aircraft. He noted China secured 100 of 500 British orders and cited Navy pilots and new ships as part of ongoing expansion.
The regular meeting of the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company will be held this evening at 3 00 o'clock. All members urged to attend. More than 29,000 conventions an all time record will be held in the United States and Canada in 1941
