About 2,000 Fairchild Aircraft unit members of the UAW CIO voted Saturday at the Maryland Theater on the choice between a 35 hour week or 1,000 layoffs. The 1,533 for the shorter week and 403 for layoffs were reported as the 35 hour week goes into immediate effect. First shift reports 7:30 am to 4 pm with second shift 4 pm to 11:30 pm.
Employees retain 85-hour weeks while a 36-hour framework keeps shifts tight. The shift gap is limited to one hour to prevent production downtime. Saturday’s orderly meeting followed Fairchild’s plan to cut hours, with hopes voiced for a 40-hour week for all workers in spring.

City Detective Albert Lowry warned that rivets used at Fairchild Aircraft to manufacture airplanes may explode when exposed to heat. Children playing in downtown alleys have found colored rivets that resemble ordinary hardware and could injure them near fire. A demonstration at City Hall showed rivets firing like dynamite when exposed to a flame.
Newark on Feb 4 a bus driver named Stuart Holzman will inherit $96,000 from his grandfather, to be received on his 20th birthday next Oct 24. Holzman plans to use the money to fund a trust for his three month old son and may form a partnership with his boss to keep driving buses.
Sevierville Tennessee February 4 a Sevier county laborer Thomas Ball 38 faced a charge for killing his six year old son Eufamous Ball in a drunken rage the beating occurred Saturday night his four year old daughter Ruby Fay witnessed the incident Sheriff Roy Whaley said the tragedy prompted the charge and investigation.
