President Truman was told the nation needs about 75 billion dollars for public works to clear backlogs in highways schools airports and similar projects. The estimate was provided by Maj. Gen. Philip B. Fleming Federal Works Administrator in a letter outlining needs and plans.
New York dig out continues after Friday's 24.8 inch storm as 30,000 workers and 2,486 machines clear streets. Mayor O'Dwyer calls the effort monumental yet sees progress while the Botanic Garden roof collapses under heavy snow, damaging prized plants including giant poinsettias and rare cassia splendida.
The Poultry and Egg National Board reports 67 percent of the goal reached with 20,106,000 bushels saved since November 15. About 91 million hens eaten in six weeks vs a 136 million goal, campaign extended to February 1. Additional culling should reduce the flock to 880 million by February 1 and save another 14,300,000 bushels.
Weather officials say the predicted snow storm bypassed the area to the north and it will be cloudy and warmer tomorrow. Keedysville observer J A Miller notes a high yesterday of 39 and a low today of 13 above zero while the State Roads Commission reports only icy spots in Garrett County and clear highways elsewhere. Northern regions endure sub zero temps and a historic blizzard toll remains in New York and New England with further drifting reported by high winds.

In Detroit last night more than twenty policemen bowled in the inter precinct league when a thief slipped away with five revolvers. Officers suspected intruders climbed a partition into the checkroom while the attendant was away at lunch. The search for the weapons continued as the raid disrupted the game.
The will of Charles H. Everly, valued at over a million dollars, was admitted to probate this morning. The widow is executrix and may run the Eyerly Department Store. She receives half the residue and the other half goes to three sisters and a brother. Eight nieces and nephews inherit the widow's share after her death, with various bequests to about twenty Eyerly’s employees. Robert H. McCauley is the attorney.
In Philadelphia on December 30 a grey brown owl perched on a Drexel Hill Christmas tree causing a half hour chase inside the Denny home. Mrs. James M. Denny and neighbors pursued the bird until she opened a window and the owl fled unharmed.
Yesterday saw a high of 37 below zero and an early morning low of 20 below. North winds prevail as conditions remain generally clear across the region.
Virgle M. Chaney has been granted an absolute divorce from Joseph L. Chaney by Judge Joseph D. Mish. The ruling dissolves the marriage, finalizing the legal separation and any associated custody or property matters as ordered in the court.

Wallace A A Wallace announces as an independent candidate for U S president in 1948 arguing peace and prosperity. He criticizes both major parties for policies he says risk war and says there is always hope for election. He made the nationwide radio address after resigning as secretary of commerce and as editor of the New Republic.
Maryland politicians reacted to Henry A. Wallace's announcement he will run as an independent for president in 1948. Senator Tydings dismissed the bid as unserious, while Harold Buchman praised the Wallace plan and urged Maryland citizens to back him, promising a Roosevelt era program for peace and prosperity. Annapolis Md Dec 30 Backers of Henry Wallace in the 1948 presidential election must file with the Maryland Secretary of State signatures of 2000 registered Maryland voters who pledge to vote for Wallace and pay a $270 filing fee. Write in ballots may be cast if the petition is not filed.
William S. Hurd a Williamsport merchant forgot a $100 bill wrapped around a loss roll of cash after viewing a film at the Maryland Theater. Perry Slate of 14 Elizabeth street found the money near her seat and turned it in earning a reward as the rightful owner identified the amount.
Boston reports a series of underground explosions last night that loft manhole covers and shattered storefronts, injuring 25 people, many firemen. Deputy Chief Quigley cites gas buildup under snow as cause. none seriously hurt, 20 treated at City Hospital.
Emma J. Blenard sues Melvin B. Liller for 7500 in damages over an auto collision on Fountain Rock road near St James. Blenard was a passenger for Powell. Powell also seeks 500 for car damage and loss of use. Legal representatives Lane Bushong Byron and Hicks.
A 15 year old Jackson youth, James Van Geisen, fled home hoping his absence would force his father and stepmother to reunite. He hitchhiked to North Carolina, spent a few days there, then slept at the Blue Ridge terminal until Det. Clarence Carroll questioned him. Police will try to contact his father or seek Red Cross aid for transport.
Bucharest reports King Mihai I abdicated today as the Communist led cabinet declared Romania a popular democratic republic. He cited constitutional changes to allow the people to choose their form of government and said he would not block that choice. The cabinet proclamation and parliament are set to ratify the actions, with Mihai’s abdication marking the end of his 26 year reign and a long dynastic saga.
The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. reports over 37.8 million dollars invested in improvements and plant expansion since V J Day. Maryland now has 112000 more telephones than at war’s end, with total Maryland telephones exceeding 516000. Despite shortages, the firm notes progress in meeting unprecedented service demands and improving existing service.
Yeggs attempted to crack a safe at Magnolia Petroleum Co in Enid Oklahoma over the weekend but the safe jammed shut seven years ago. The company has a standing reward of 12 dollars for anyone able to open it, which the robbers missed.
Rangoon Burma December 20. UG San pre war premier of Burma was sentenced to death by a Burmese special tribunal. He was convicted of abetting the murder of Aung San and other Burmese ministers last July.
Washington December 30 Senator Glen H Taylor of Idaho said he is considering a run for vice president on an independent ticket headed by Henry A Wallace. He said tonight he is giving consideration to the idea and weighing his options with Wallace.
Washington officials report wholesale prices rising past the May 1920 peak with 900 commodities tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing an index around 162.5 for December 20. Economists warn the trend may continue into 1948, despite potential political pressure to curb increases. The consumer price index also hits record levels, though wholesale and consumer measures diverge due to item coverage differences.
Westminster Md Dec 30 seven fire companies fought a spectacular blaze that destroyed the Lincoln Manufacturing Company building and damaged nearby structures. Flames swept half a block through three Schaeffer Lumber Co one story buildings and two storage buildings owned by antique dealer Mrs Joseph O Farrell. Westminster units with help from Mt Airy Manchester Union Bridge Hampstead Reisterstown Owings Mills battled the fire, reported under control by 2 am.
Clarence W. Haldemen, sought by Hagerstown police since 1945 for check forgery, will leave Leavenworth prison February 10 next year but may not face trial soon. Police say he is wanted in eleven cities including Cedar Rapids and Binghamton for forgery and related charges. Hagerstown holds detainers as fifth.
Richmond Va Dec 30 Lewis Ful ton Lewis Jr radio commentator and Maryland farmer filed in Richmond Chancery Court for writ of mandamus against Southern States Co operative to force recognition as a member. He says he was ousted at the annual stockholders meeting last month after a 2000 to 7 vote ratifying a board resolution removing him for conduct harmful to the organisation.
Hagerstown rent control reports a rush of 1948 lease filings as tomorrow marks the final day for landlord tenant agreements. Leases must be effective through 1948 and provide the same services with a rent hike no more than 10 percent.
Mayor Richard Hawken announced the Williamsport tax rate for 1948 at 55 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The rate remains unchanged after several years, according to the mayor.
