Berlin suffered heavy damage in a major nighttime raid, with Canadian bombers among those involved. Officials say about three quarters of the city endured ruins, marking a drastic blow to Berlin as Nazi administrative and industrial hub.
A Swedish correspondent in Berlin reported heavy RAF air raids on Berlin from November through December. The measures show a rising volume of bombs with successive raids dropping thousands of long tons on Berlin and nearby Ludwigshafen.
Annapolis Md Dec 86 Three major acts from the 1943 General Assembly become effective at the new year including the continuance assessment plan for property tax, a forest conservancy act licensing timber production, and a uniform tax sales law across 23 counties. The plan subdivides counties into districts for yearly reassessment, replacing varied local rules.
Prime Minister Churchill announced via No. 10 Downing Street that he has recovered from pneumonia and can transact business fully. He said he would travel to an unannounced destination, likely in the Middle East, and emphasized he has not relinquished his duties. City police seek a small man who allegedly forged the name of Joseph D. Baker on a check to buy a dress for 25.40 with 8.00 dress price. The clerk alerted Baker, a former sheriff, who did not recognize the man. The suspect obtained the dress and change, with Baker’s contracting firm name stamped on the back, likely printed by a toy press.
Three of five lower Eastern Shore dairies enjoined by a federal court from selling milk above OPA prices threaten to close if the injunction stands. They cite lack of notice for hearings set Jan 4 in Baltimore. Clifford Culver of Fairview Dairy says he and brothers will sell 100 guernsey cows. John Holt of Homestead Dairy calls injunction relieving headaches but pities milk customers. John Smith of Synayr Dairy says he may quit under current OPA orders to protect customers.
In London it is reported Premier Mikolajzyk of the Polish government in exile travels to the United States for talks with President Roosevelt. He may request mediation on the full Russo Polish issue.
Rep. Sheppard of California, chairman of the House naval appropriations subcommittee, urged maintaining a postwar navy unmatched by any nation. He rejected scrapping equipment and said ship construction will peak late next year with the program not finished until late 1944, supporting years of high defense spending.
An important meeting of the Washington County Farm Bureau will be held at the YMCA at 1:30 on Friday afternoon, Dec 31. Delegates who attended the national convention will report and delegates will be elected to attend the State convention in Baltimore next month. All Farm Bureau members urged to attend.

A veteran Baltimore city employee, Ryland Archie Brown, 42, pleaded guilty to stealing 18141 from the municipal employees retirement system. He received a deferment of sentence to allow restitution efforts. Brown testified he spent the funds to live beyond his means and to pay alimony and life insurance. The judge considered prison later. prosecutors noted forged loan, withdrawal applications, and 38 illegal withdrawals since 1938. Brown had served in city employment since 1926, including time in the city auditor's department.
In Algiers on December 20 a memorial mass for Admiral Jean Darlan led to Admiral Gervais De La Font being relieved of command and placed on the retired list by the French National Committee. Darlan's body remains held at the Admiralty awaiting burial in France.
Dan Tobin, president of the International Teamsters Union, predicted in The International Teamster that Wendell Willkie would be the 1944 Republican presidential nominee. He also said if the war ends by next June the GOP would win the November elections, noting Dewey has only a chance.
City and Blue Ridge bus firms honor 34 drivers for a year with no accidents in late 1943. Blue Ridge accounts 25 awardees. several long-time records include Mahlon Cunningham and Charles Small with eleven accident free years. Additional five year and under honorees include Calvin Geisbert and Edward Kefanver among others. Hagerstown drivers Dellinger, Grossnickle, Kennedy, Martin, and Spickler also earned year-long safety awards.
In a military service update, Sgt. Hull serves in the anti-aircraft corps after five years at home and nearly four in Hawaii, with six months training in electrical school. Staff Sgt. Grayson Kelsh returns to Camp Beauregard, La., from the holidays with family, while Sgt. Lloyd W. Gibney transfers to Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif. Seaman 2/c William B. Middlecamp from the South Pacific recounts a belated Thanksgiving on deck amid constant gunfire and loud paymaster play-by-play, noting that good fighter planes ease hardship and that sleep is taken on the deck and gun mounts during perilous times.
