Dual Highway To Be Concrete Project In Maryland

The Dual Highway, ranked No 1 on the 1946 Maryland State Roads Commission list, will use a concrete surface for the Hagerstown to Frederick route. Bid plans for concrete surfaced surface were ordered by a majority vote, rejecting alternate macadam bids which could save up to 200000. Work is slated to start early next spring with a 50 50 funding arrangement with the Federal Public Roads Administration.

Navy Asks For More Enlistments This Week

Navy seeks 11 more enlistees to fill December quota of 24 men at Hagerstown station. Enlisted this week were Ivan B. Shingler and Clifford E. Green. Recruiter Birch Shepherd reports the office will close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

City Offices Schedule: Water and Tax Closures Saturday

Two of three city offices, the water and tax departments, will close Saturday at noon and stay shut until Wednesday. The light plant office remains open until 5 p m Saturday and Monday but will be closed Tuesday Christmas day.

In Chicago on December 21 a single customer prompted Henry Zwart to lock the shop. A gunman demanded cash, but Zwart killed the lights. The robber grabbed $150 from the register and, unable to exit through the door, backed away and crashed through the storefront glass.

Flight Officer Donald G. Shiffer, recently returning from the South Pacific Theater, is placed on inactive status by the Navy Department. Four Day Christmas Holiday At Fairchild Plant

Fairchild Aircraft Division employees will receive a four day Christmas holiday from Friday evening through Tuesday. Plants will cease work at 4 p m to allow gift exchanges. Regular weekend days off Saturday and Sunday remain unchanged for all workers.

A four hour fire in Nashua New Hampshire caused about 100000 in damages to two blocks of the business district. A city dump truck accident claimed the life of Andrew Smith Jr aged 9 at the scene.

Clearspring Sets 1946 Tax Rate At 50 Cents

Mayor I. Donald Ankeney announced the Clearspring tax rate for 1946 is 50 cents per $100 of property value. The town faces about $10,000 bonded debt with a $2,000 surplus reserve. MacArthur refutes report of Russia dispute in Japan

General MacArthur denied a broadcast claim that his headquarters argued with the Russians over Soviet troops in Japan and that he threatened to resign. Navy taps Hagerstown native as new recruiter

John Squires Jr., a 16 year submarine veteran and former U S Navy crewman on the U S S Tuna, will take charge of the Hagerstown Navy Recruiting Station at City Hall after January 1. He replaces Specialist Birch Shepherd who expects discharge. Squires has served in the Pacific and helped sink five Japanese ships. He calls Hagerstown his home since 1929 and has traveled globally, including work for Chrysler in Germany in 1927 where his father led Chrysler plants.

Second Airman Husband Killed in Near Year

Mrs. Sue Haislip Jarrell Bonham of Logan county was informed that her second Army airman husband Lt. Col. Francis H. Bonham died in a Mitchell bomber crash on the Florida west coast. Her first husband Lt. Herschel Jarrell of Van, a West Point graduate and former Army football captain, was killed over Europe last February.
