In circuit court Judge Joseph D. Mish lambasted local pawnbrokers for cruel practices including taking clothing of children of drinkers as loan security. He warned on possible legislative action and noted police difficulties because brokers only report loans, not outright purchases, which can shield stolen goods.
Twenty nine more soldiers from local areas were honorably discharged from the Army at Fort Meade separation center between December 1 and 3. John H. MacFaul Jr of the Maryland Federation of Republicans said a 16 member drafting committee will travel to Hagerstown on Friday to urge Herman L. Mills to announce his candidacy for governor at a 7 p.m. dinner in Mills’ honor at the Hotel Alexander. The federation, opposed to McKeldin and Galen Tait, aims to back a GOP candidate who can win and provide militant constructive leadership.
Joseph Strock of Funkstown an employee of the Western Maryland railroad roundhouse was removed to Washington County Hospital with undetermined hip injuries after a fall into a pit at the roundhouse this morning.
The Fourth Ward Democratic Club to host a welcome home for members returning from the war at its December meeting tomorrow night in the clubroom on North Mulberry Street. About 75 members served in the armed forces. President Clarence E. Doornberger said refreshments will follow the business session.
Paul J. Baker a 43 year old Cearfoss garage operator was found dead in his car from apparent monoxide gas poisoning in his Cearfoss garage early today. A sparrow found dead near the car suggests the same fate. Baker lived at 912 Hamilton Boulevard and had recently taken over the Cearfoss garage buying the business and property from Alvey Holsinger. Deputy medical examiner S R Wells ordered an autopsy and Deputy Sheriff Bruce Spickler noted the engine was warm and the key in the switch. Baker may have scratched his neck trying to loosen a tie before losing consciousness. He is survived by wife Elsie two children Patsy Ann John D and Robert L his father Daniel Baker and siblings and served in the armed forces and U S Navy. The body was moved to A K Coffman funeral home for viewing with funeral announcements to follow.

Four suits of divorce were docketed today, the first for December. Agnes Louise Mumma filed suit against Oliver E. Mumma, Wilmer Angle Turner against Lois Marie Turner, and Alma Pauline Norris against Charles Paul Norris, all through Attorney C. K. Hartle. Bernard F. Knott, through Attorney S. C. Strite, filed suit against Alveda M. Knott.
Chambersburg schools report sharp attendance drop due to grippe spreading across the town. Chambersburg High School recorded 256 pupil absences yesterday while many teachers are also ill. Church attendance and industrial plants show reduced turnout as the illness spreads.
Capt. Charles B. McVay III pleads not guilty to negligence and inefficiency charges in the loss of the cruiser Indianapolis. He acknowledges statements made with his consent and confirms he commanded the ship on July 30, 1945 en route from Guam to Leyte, as proceedings begin.
In Shanghai 2400 U S Army officers and men head homeward today aboard escort carriers Anzio and Kadashan Bay with west coast ports expected a week before Christmas. In all 9000 troops start home from here before December 10 aboard seven ships, leaving 26000 Army personnel in Shanghai and 53000 Marines in the north.
The Honolulu edition of Stars and Stripes, a soldier owned paper with 90 000 circulation, defends enlisted men against brass orders and demobilization doublespeak. Seaman Paul T. Stewart sought to cancel orders after being reassigned with only 18 discharge points. The paper, edited by enlisted men and advised by officers, continues to push free expression across Army and Navy readers in the Pacific.
Washington December 4 The House military committee moved quickly to honor President Truman's Christmas deadline by drafting a law to bar strikes or lockouts for 30 days during crucial disputes. Chairman May urged a closed session to shape a bill with arbitration and penalties while seeking swift Senate action.
In Detroit, UAW CIO leaders oppose the President's call to halt the GM strike. R J Thomas says the strike is sound and moral and questions ending it before a government fact finding board is appointed. Reuther and Addes seek tangible concessions before resuming work. Delegates to the GM conference will decide locally.
Russell D. Anderson of 320 Mitchell Avenue and William F. Chaney of 236 West Side Avenue were fined $10 and costs after pleading guilty to shooting across a paved highway. Game Warden E. R. McCullough arrested them for the four point buck claim. The season opened yesterday and a second deer was reported near Woodmont Rod and Gun Club preserve.
Maurice H. Lyons gets his car back in Baltimore on December 4 but finds it heavily stripped. Missing parts include wheels fenders radiator hood steering gear windshield wipers fan belt tires and assorted nuts and bolts.
Lewis Heine of Baltimore former GM Company employee has purchased the Russell T. Bair grocery and meat business at the North Mulberry street Hast avenue corner. Heine takes over December 1 and will run the shop as Bair did, with property including the tavern building occupied by Charles N. Bair. Sale handled by Brewer and Lindsay realty firm.
Several criminal appeal cases were disposed of in circuit court this morning. Milton Burger was found guilty of selling whiskey without a license by Judge Joseph D Mish. Clarence Felligley charged with robbery of George Hill was found guilty. his companion Doris Lipps was found guilty in a separate trial. Felligley testified about buying beer and going to a George Street address where the woman took the money. He later said Feigley attacked him.
Frosty conditions sweep Tokyo with the temperature dropping to four below zero, setting a new record for 1815 as Kyodo News reports.
About 600000 workers were idle as a one day stoppage hit 12 Cudahy plants with 10000 employees participating. Louis J. Clark of the CIO United Packinghouse Workers Union sought a 25 cent per hour raise and called a national strike conference in Chicago. In Jersey City 400 workers quit, while Kansas City and Detroit figures showed varied responses amid ongoing labors disputes and opposition to President Truman's plan to end the strike.
The Municipal Water Department completed a survey showing 20 miles of highway outside city limits could be served with fire hydrants using 115 hydrants at an estimated cost around 20000. Hagerstown would install if the county pays. water mains parallel Williamsport Funkstown Sharpsburg Cavetown and Middleburg pikes past the airport.
Terry Lee Sines and Charles Carty reported thefts of bicycles this morning. Sines lost a bike in front of Mapleway Bowling Arbors and Carty a bike from Henry’s Theatre side. W. T. Click of Moller's Apartments reported a revolver stolen from his car while parked at his residence.
