President Johnson plans an early meeting with economic advisers to craft a federal campaign against price hikes. The session aims to curb wage and price pressures tied to war financing, as October living costs rose sharply and financial markets watch closely.
Navy Lt Frank Harrington of Bennington Vermont was rescued at Da Nang airbase after his plane was shot down off North Vietnam. South Viet Nam reports 7th Regiment destroyed in heavy fighting. Government casualties for the week include 185 missing in action and 1,861 wounded among South Vietnamese soldiers, while American deaths drop to a weekly total near 240. The U.S. toll overall exceeds 1,300 killed with ongoing Allied operations and several large Viet Cong attacks.
President Johnson has no Christmas trip planned to South Viet Nam, despite Newsweek speculation that advisers urged a visit. Reports cite wintery combat activity as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces sustain momentum with battalion and company size attacks, while Hue Phu Bai area and Da Nang remain contested. Aviation raids continue, with 29 ton bombings near Vinh and in North Viet Nam as Air Force and Navy aircraft fly armed reconnaissance missions.
Rochester city officials report five parking spaces on the upper Rochester Parking Lot have been rented monthly. City Clerk John Conrad announced meters will be removed. He noted the spaces lie where thieves often break parking meters, though the meters rarely hold much money.
October department store sales in Hagerstown rose seven percent versus the prior year level, per a Federal Reserve Bank report from Richmond. Monthly parking rent in Rochester was set at 4 dollars higher per month than a year ago, following a Board of Public Works approval in October.

Rutledge ruled the prior nonconforming use by Hagerstown Spring Works ended when a barn was demolished and no efforts were made to rent the lot for two years. Mowen’s permit was denied, and his conviction for violating city zoning law stood on appeal. The case clarifies nonconforming use rules and the city’s power to restrict expansion or resume of discontinued uses.
Early today two traffic accidents attributed to ice patches injured three people in Harpers Ferry and Hagerstown. Ver son F. Eichelberger and passengers William N. Benchoff Allen J Longnecker sustained minor injuries. Eichelberger’s car struck a metal pole. A second crash on Berchwood Drive caused $350 damage to Donald D. Wolfe and Bruce Wingamen’s vehicles after Wolfe skidded on ice. No charges were filed.
Maryland tax agents seized 27 fifths of bourbon and charged Margaret M. Shaw of Bethesda with transporting liquor into the state from the District of Columbia. The case against Shaw proceeds to trial January 5, as state officials extend an Alcoholic Beverages Tax Discloser watch through the holidays in the Washington area.
A six inch water line broke Tuesday evening in the 900 block of Beechwood Drive. The City Water Department began turning off water this morning and aims to complete repairs by mid afternoon. Only homes in the block will be without water during the shutdown. Officials suspect natural causes from temperature changes.
