Smithsburg adopts new sewer plan for school site
The Board of Education approves a sewerage disposal system for Smithsburg School based on Abel Wom an's recommendations. A 50 by 600 foot gravel strip purchased from Walter Smith will hold pits to carry sewage off the property. Work to start in a week or ten days with a nominal cost plant. Additional teachers rotated in as trustees approve hires. The county’s total teachers will be marginally fewer with more pupils per teacher to economize while preserving a functional system. Emmert Gosnell aged 20 sustained a hip wound when his .22 rifle discharged as he picked it up while walking along the Conocheague Creek. He walked three quarters of a mile to Fairview road for aid. Emmett Neiswander aided and transported him to Washington County Hospital where an operation was performed and his condition was reported good.

Master Paul Sprecher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Sprecher, is slowly improving after a chickenpox illness. Local families, including the Bowards Burgans and Downins, visit near Pinesburg and Broadfording friends host the Ladies Aid gathering at St. Paul’s Church social room with many attendees. Additional visits occur among the Sprecher and Burgan families, including outings to Fairview and Mansonsville, and neighbors spend evenings and Sundays with relatives.

Open House Marks Orphans Home Birthday in San Mar'
The 49th anniversary of the Orphans' Home will be celebrated at the San Mar institution starting about 10 p m on Thursday Sept 1 continuing until the last visitor leaves. Open house invites the public to visit and learn about the Home. Donations are welcome though it is not taxed, funded by investments and a small Washington County appropriation. The Home has 68 children the largest number in its history. Dinner and supper will be served by the Home Auxiliary with refreshments available. The Keedysville Band and Joe Mills and his fiddlers will provide music.
