Peters Named Police Chief
William BL Peters was formally named Chief of Police by the Board of Street Commissioners after serving as acting head. He previously led the department as plainclothes man and replaced Capt. Carl EB McCleary who was discharged. The board also awarded Erie City Iron Works a $120,500 contract for two boilers at the municipal electric light plant and work on the addition foundation is underway with bids to follow.

British Submarine Is Presumed Lost
The British submarine Spearfish, credited with torpedoing the Admiral Scheer last April, is overdue and presumed lost according to the Admiralty. The 670 ton vessel, commanded by Lt. Commander J. H. Forbes, carried six 21 inch torpedo tubes and could crash dive in 360 seconds.

New Bridge Opens Today at Havre De Grace Maryland
Havre De Grace welcomed Governor OConor and state officials for the dedication of the new 4,500,990 Susquehanna river toll bridge. The 5,737 foot span extends the north south arterial highway, replaces the old double decker, and will carry 10,000 to 20,000 vehicles daily. Toll rates start at 20 cents for passenger cars, with higher charges for heavier vehicles.
