Preparations intensified in Manila as Japanese surrender envoys are moved quietly to the city under military guard. MacArthur’s position remains undisclosed as Tokyo seeks an immediate reply to a proposed cease fire and the Manchuria offensive.
The State Public Service Commission will hold a second hearing Monday in Baltimore on petitions by new mediary land airlines to include Hagerstown in their air service. Pan-Maryland Airways had an earlier hearing. commissions will continue deliberations on Blue Ridge Lines Red Star Motor Coaches White and Columbia Airlines and others seeking statewide passenger routes.
Reports from Domei in English and Japanese broadcasts describe Japan’s postwar priorities. Reconversion, reconstruction, new taxes, and preserving national polity under occupation are emphasized. Prime Minister Inukai Kuni pledges to endure hardships and safeguard order, while preparations for a national history project are noted.
The War Labor Board urged private industry to restrain wage increases to aid reconversion while opposing wage cuts. It will disband after current cases are resolved, with wage stabilization to be assumed by another agency, likely under Secretary Schwellenbach. Secretary of State Byrnes notified the Communist dominated Bulgarian government that the United States does not regard it as adequately representative of all democratic elements. He said Bulgaria has not arranged for all democratic Bulgarians to participate in the August 24 election free from fear and intimidation.
Baltimore August 18 750000 Marylanders are entitled to unemployment compensation from a 128060400 fund on deposit with the U S Treasury for unemployment benefit payments Director Stephen Cromwell of the State Unemployment Compensation Board said. The fund grew during wartime boom by over 20000000 annually and has accumulated since January 199% at wars end about 2800 Marylanders were receiving compensation. The 128060400 fund comes from a three percent tax on workers salary with ninety percent to the state and the remainder to the federal government for admin purposes.
The Japanese hospital ship Yasukuni Maru, used to smuggle soldiers and munitions under a Red Cross flag, was brought to Manila by a prize crew. Crew and patients were found with arms and ammunition labeled as supplies and sent to a Luzon stockade. Guards described the crew and patients as despondent after the voyage and failed attempts to clean the ship.
Baltimore August 18 The State Office of Price Administration said suspensions against dealers in gas oiloline stoves fuel oil and processed feeds were lifted as of August 15 from regional OPA New York notified. Hundreds of Maryland dealers were on the suspension list at war’s end and no longer must keep suspension records though pricing and other regulations remain in force.
The War Finance committee of the Treasury Department congratulates Pangborn Corporation of Hagerstown for total war production since 1939. G. Mitchell Griffith notes overcoming obstacles and commends Pangborn and its associates in their march to victory, addressed to A. Lesley Gardner and John T. Bell, co chairs of Pangborn War Loan drives.
Two hearings on overcharges in private car sales were held by the local War Price and Rationing board price panel. The panel found one overcharge at 3127.60 and another at 39.80 and recommended refunds, agreed by the sellers. Some hearings were postponed due to a two day holiday. those cases will be heard next Friday. The docket also includes charges for services and two grocer complaints for not posting ceiling prices and for sugar overcharges.
A former Hagerstown resident, SK3/c George E. Youngs, recalls a near miss off Okinawa as kamikaze planes loomed over ships at dusk. He describes AA fire, one plane exploding at sea, while another struck a ship amid heavy casualties. Youngs mentions frontline artillery, bitter fighting, and his three years in service in Europe and the Pacific.
The Ha gerstown Retailers' Bureau sets a new picnic date for Wednesday August 29 at the Conococheague Sportsmen's clubhouse on the Potomac near Miller's Sawmill. J W Cannon is picnic chairman. Activities include entertainment music and magic cats and games. 1 p m to 10 p m lunch at 6 30 p m.
Rockford Illinois plans an airborne DDT spray over the metropolitan area to combat infantile paralysis. The B 25 bomber from Dayton will cover gutters and roadsides at 250 feet and 200 mph, dispersing 215 gallons per minute across a 150 yard wide strip as poliomyelitis cases rise to 128 with 16 deaths.
Fort Worth Texas credited with downing two enemy aircraft during a photo reconnaissance mission near Yokohama. Lt Tom Robinson of New York administered first aid to wounded aboard the plane. The mission, though part of Japan’s cease fire ordering, was labeled successful by headquarters.
City Engineer Charles W. Stump has completed plans for two miles of alleyways, new sewer and water lines, a city memorial possibly an auditorium, and other projects. Mayor Sweeney praised Hagerstown’s large postwar surplus and readiness to act once labor is available, with authority to buy land up to 50 000 annually for improvements.
11 year old Frederick G. Reeder of Route 5 Hagerstown received a serious left hand injury from an accidental gun discharge. He underwent emergency surgery at Washington County Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Larceny report filed with police by E. K. Eyerly about the theft of an American flag and its flagpole from in front of 63 West Franklin Street yesterday. Police noted the event took place on the property and are investigating.
President Truman will lead the nation in a non denominational day of prayer and thanksgiving for peace on August 19 at 10 a m in the East Room of the White House. Chaplains Luther D Daniel and William N Thomas will conduct the service attended by the President and his family the White House staff the Supreme Court the Cabinet and Congress leaders.
